Another advantage is it also limits what your opponent will do in the range when it comes to striking.
When you have a guy like GSP who can hit takedowns so effectively it makes it hard to open up your striking game when you fear being taken down.
How often do you see guys throw head kicks, or any kicks (shin kicks aside) for that matter at GSP? Hell, most guys do not even throw to loopy at him.

did you ever think about the fact that maybe he's not so concerned about being taken down because his BJJ is so good? it doesn't mean he has bad TDD. it just means he doesn't care and would rather preserve his energy to try to finish his opponent rather than use it to win a decision.
i don't know if he's a good wrestler.. but i'm sure he could be good at it if he wanted to.

I don't think he wants to be put in the same situation that he faced versus Sonnen for five rounds, hoping for a last minute triangle. So against a top level wrestler, he should be concerned that he's not fighting where he is clearly superior at [stand up]. Like when he fought Maia, he kept it standing because he didn't want to willingly give his opponent a better chance of beating him.
