Good riddance
The Hudson’s Bay Co. says it will close most of its 64 remaining Zellers Inc. stores in Canada that aren’t being converted to Target stores, affecting up to 6,400 jobs.
A spokeswoman for Hudson’s Bay Co. said Thursday the Zellers parent company has been contemplating what to do with the brand since last year, when it sold the majority of the leases for the discount stores to Target Corp.
“After a lengthy review and numerous discussions with various parties it became apparent that continuing to operate the Zellers banner in its current form was not viable, particularly given the geographic footprint of the remaining locations,” said spokeswoman Tiffany Bourre.
Most of the remaining stores will be closed by March 2013, the company said.
But Ms. Bourre said the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility of maintaining some of the store locations and opening them under another retail banner.
Ms. Bourre said that Zellers is “considering options” for certain locations, including “rebranding some stores” – a determination that has yet to be made.
It did not provide any indications as to which stores, or how many, would remain open.
The company said it operates 64 stores that were not acquired by Target, or were already slated to close. An average Zellers has about 100 employees.
A spokeswoman for Walmart Canada wouldn’t comment on whether Canada’s largest retailer is interested in acquiring any of the locations. Target Corp. could not immediately be reached for comment.
Target plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada. It has purchased the leasehold interests of 189 sites currently operated by Zellers Inc. and it says about $10-million to $11-million will be invested to remodel each facility.

Good riddens, seems like they gave up competing a long time ago. Zeller's is where the highest prices are the law.

Newbie
Gave Zellers a chance for years over Walmart. Finally the 20% higher prices and constantly OOS on everything made us switch. Zellers is finally being put out of its misery, think of it as a mercy killing.

I'm surprised it survived for this long. Looking forward to the arrival of Target.

I hope HBC converts many of the unsold smaller town stores to "The Bay". With Sears on its last legs, I wouldn't want to be stuck with only Walmart to shop at. I get nauseous every time I enter Wally World. (nothing but crap, low quality goods).

When the new store opens Im going down on opening day to celebrate Zellers being gone.
It's all in our head... Walmart makes us expect cheap prices that nobody can beat...

And don't forget their bogus advertising where they put some ridiculously low price and in small print... after trade & save for a million points.

i don't think the bay will take them over. the bay's target market and Z are completely different. if you look at the Z locations, they are in the less desirable areas compared to the bay.
Sears, i believe they are doing the right things right now. if they don't turn it around in 3 years, they are toast. Their home services and applicances etc are good, only their department store is in trouble.

Good riddance on Zellers. Not so sure what's so great about Target though. I went the other day while in Florida and it really just looks like a mix of Zellers (mostly cause of the red) and Walmart

That's a shame, I was hoping for another "Cucumber" coupon fiasco, lol. Got A LOT of milleage out of that little nugget
I'd venture to guess that Target will aquire many of the remaining stores as well.
