The old Punching bag
I've been hitting the sandbag for almost two months now, but a few things still have me confused and I was hoping someone around here would know the answer.
I'm using 16 oz gloves with wraps and after about 15-20 min my knuckles hurt like hell. They turn all red and I can't punch anymore because it hurts too much. Is this normal?
The feeling lasts around two days and any extensive pressure on them cause them to hurt. The pain started when I was about a month in and became less of an issue. I don't know if I'm getting use to it or it's actually lessening, but I'm still curious.
Also, it feels like the lower part of my hand, when I'm making a fist, gets pushed in when I punch. That or the knuckles is what causes me to stop punching. My biceps or triceps use to give out sooner, but I started working out and they aren't even tired when I give up from pain now. Again, is that normal? When I used martial arts gloves, not the red boxing one's, I didn't have this problem so I'm pretty sure my technique is right. Any ideas?

Wha martial art where u in? Or jus ahd the gloves? Well, sounds like u jus not used to it..better then punchin it with no gloves (skins my knuckles) Try wrapping 2..an jus dont go so hard..let it hurt a lil..then stop..toughen em up..no point killin em an not bein able to practice for days..patience sucks I know
Envy u..u can condition ur shins...kick the bag with shins low power..then around 30 reps u be at full...an do 100 reps...

I use to take Tae Kwon Do a long time ago, so I still had the gloves from then. Though, I was a lot weaker back then haha.
When I first started I cut up my knuckles with wraps and the martial arts gloves a lot. I think my knuckles have toughened up so problems with cuts now.
Actually when I started with punching bag I had the intention of doing some kicks too, but when I tried to do some basic side kicks or front kicks it showed how out of practice I was. Maybe I'll take that up again

I took it around 5 years ago for a few years. I made it to the blue belt heh. Though I don't remember there being a specific elbow block. I remember having to block side kicks with your arm extended, but hey what do I know
Must hurt like a... well you know.

It hurts, but you'll get over it eventually. It used to hurt me too when I'd be out of training for 3-4 weeks. You start slowly and in about 2 weeks you can hammer the bag like there's no tomorrow.
You DO NOT block side kicks under any circumstanses. You can end up with a broken arm.
Practicing at home is nice, but you can't push yourself hard enough. If you don't push yourself-there's no gain(maybe a small one).
PS. I am selling my taekwondo equipment if anyone needs it,or if you know someone who needs it.

How are you wrapping your hands? 16oz gloves should provide plenty of protection.
When you punch, which knuckles are making the most contact with the bag? The two knuckles closest to the thumb (the two biggest ones) should be making contact.

Oh yeah I have a 100 pound everlast bag and I use to punch it with out gloves everyday and yes I can punch :@. Yeah to tally bruises your hands, yeah and when you punch, punch with vertical fist because your bones will be alined if you do. If you can hit with your knuckles middle to pinky saves you from injury. I'm thinking of getting that male model with the tank at the bottom. Then I'm gonna throw my old bag away. Get Bas Rutten's combat dvds if you're really into fighting.
