It's about as cheap as DSLRs get. Very small design. No image stabilization, unfortunately.
BTW, Sony Alphas all use CompactFlash as their primary storage medium. And the 6.1mp of the Nikon D40 is plenty. More is not always better.

You should give the E410 a try and you might be pleasantly surprised at the result for the price you pay. The Oly kit lenses are some of the best out there. I personally would prefer the E410 over the D40 and the lower end Alpha. As for IS, do you take a lot of shots in the dark? I have IS and it is rarely used.

Yeah, we have the Alpha with us right now. The Olympus should be arriving shortly. We'll probably do a side by side comparison between the Sony and Olympus, and pick the better of the two.
About taking shots in the dark, it depends - sometimes I take shots indoors...we're there are no lights on and the blinds are closed, but not the dark as in outside...well very rarely.

We picked this up as well to replace a highend film camera that the motor in the body finally gave out. I spent a couple of hrs playing with it last night and I am pleasantly surprised. I actually like the scene settings and they seem to work pretty well. Jay, you may really like this one. There are something like 20 different scene settings, things like snow and sand, sunsets and rises, sports, kids, night landscapes, night portraits, fireworks, candlelight, etc. I was playing with night portraits last night indoors in very low light and the shots look really good IMHO.

Just ordered one online and should be a nice compliment to my D200. The dimensions are of the camera are actually very similar to my old FM2m film SLR plus the Olympus is lighter. Not a tiny camera by any means, but very portable compared to my D200. The fact the lenses are supposedly pretty good is a bonus. Hopefully it arrives by the 31st!
