I'm just wondering, should I get a new video card? (HD 6870, GTX 460) or should I just torture my video card until it REALLY fries and get a new system entirely. I'm still on the C2Q generation. I know that if I get a topish end GPU now, I can always pop it into my next system. Should I sell the working one and get a new vidcard to replace them both, or should just wait it out? Current specs are below:
Q8300 @ 3.2GHz
P5N-D
4GB DDR2-PC6400
HD 4870 512 CF

The 6850/70 are great performers and if you Xfire the, you get almost double the performance (most games get at least 80%) You can find the 50's for $190. Best bang for your buck at the moment

I'd say use it as much as you can. Sandy Bridge (new Intel processors) is just around the corner, which should be quite a large upgrade from your Q8300. Nvidia just released the GTX 580 and soon enough AMD will release Cayman XT. There's a lot of competition within the next two to three months; prices are bound to drop.

I'm in somewhat similar situation. Q9550 @3.4G with 4870 1G. screen flick a lot even in 2D. light 3D game with "default GPU/memory clock" with 100% fan still crash. GTX 580 can be found for $540 shipped. Will wait for Cayman XT come out then decide what to do.
