At this point, any upgrades are largely irrelevant. We've reached peak performance. Any upgrades to the ram, gpu and processor is just a e-peen measuring contest.

I'd upgrade if the camera is upgraded to a 10MP Lytro camera. It'll be a few years before the newest Sony stacked BSI sensors make it into phones.

Don't forget to put a [Don't Thank Me!!] in the thread tittle just like the other OnePlus thread so everyone will thank you (reverse psychology).

Another misinformed 810 hater. The v2.1 has nothing to do with being underclocked. In fact Qualcomm actually increased the gpu clock speed in v2.1. It is roumered the phone will run at 1.8GHz, a 200mhz underclock, but that has nothing to do with v2.1, rather a choice oneplus made.

so they pre-emptively underclocked/throttled CPU speed in anticipation for heat issues... so what's the point of 810 again?

It's a failure (810 v1). Because of hard throttling, some tests it's slower than 801/805
Qualcomm lost its credibility denying overheating claims, but then there's many revisions of 810?!

On top of my head:

Sony Z3+/Z4, HTC M9, Xiaomi Mi Note Pro worked on variations to make it run cooler
LG Flex 2 uses 810 but their flagship G4 which came later uses 808
Samsung cancelled 810 and instead used their Exynos chip due to overheating claims
Less than expected sales
Next Snapdragon 820 supplier is switched from TSMC to Samsung

But the latest revision should narrow the gap in performance and is the best version so far.

Maybe OnePlus got a sweet discount for using the 810 with all the bad rep and other manufacturers backing away from it.

Sorry to break it to everyone. Almost all mobile chips throttle and this isn't the first time benchmarks cause overheating. My Galaxy s4 shuts off from overheating (65 degrees +) when running antutu. The 810 is significantly faster then the 801 and cost a lot more for manufacturers as well.

The problem is that 810 throttling is frequent and severe.

Qualcomm or OPO advocate?
I'm not saying that the 810 doesn't throttle or heat up. It's just that the issue is very over blown. And it is frustrating reading users post that the chip is useless when they don't have all the information. All mobile chips throttle and overheat. Maybe the 810 does it a bit more, but in day to day use you will never notice. With some software optimizations the 810 will be just as usable as the 801, as well as provide better performance.

So why are manufacturers using Qualcomm vs the apparently superior Atom?

Better compatibility, better battery life, better graphics?

Yeah, just seems it was rushed with industry pressures.
And now it seems they are fixing hardware issues with software patches. Which avoids the issue sometimes at loss or functionality.
Yes, it will work by downclocking but isn't it changing from advertised specs and value of the product?

After the patches older models like M8 and Z3 outperforms M9 and Z4.

But yeah that being said, this newer version should have a lot better performance than the previous versions.

I wonder if they will use the 'invite' system again. That was what stopped me from buying the One. Fortunately because of this I was able to buy the superior Asus Zenfone 2 for less $$.

There is a sucker born every minute. After all the hype they generated, they didn't even sell 2 million phones. It is aimed at foreigners as OnePlus is a non-player in China.
