A school in Leamington, Ont. was the target of back-to-back bomb threats Tuesday that forced evacuations of the building and searches by police.
At about 11:20 a.m. school officials received a call that a bomb was inside Cardinal Carter Secondary School in the community near Windsor. Police were called and students evacuated from the building, according to police Const. Kevin O'Neil.
"Nothing was found and the students were allowed to return approximately 30 minutes later," O'Neil told CTV Newsnet.
But the ordeal was not over as another phone call was received by the school at about 12:25 p.m.
Once again, the caller said a bomb was inside the school.
"Again the same message was that there was a bomb inside. Again the school was evacuated, searched, nothing was found and the students again were allowed to return to class," O'Neil said.
The disruptions at the school came just a day after 33 people were killed during a rampage by a gun-wielding student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The massacre at that post-secondary institution is considered to be the worst of its kind in American history.
With those images of terror still fresh in people's minds, O'Neil said responding to Cardinal Carter school was a little troubling. He added that the dual bomb threats were treated the same.
"Of course, you never know (if it's a hoax) and I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that the thought didn't quickly cross my mind, but it's important to note that regardless of what happened yesterday, we would have treated this incident here today in Leamington ... no differently."
Police are investigating the source of the bomb threats and are hoping for co-operation.
"Kids at school talk. Hopefully somebody will put the word out if in fact it was a student."
"So hopefully somebody will come forward with information that will help us find out who's responsible," O'Neil said.
