[Ontario] Free Smart Thermostat. [2017 is full, registering for 2018]

Deal Link:
Update Oct 19: Confirmation emails are being sent to 2017 applicants.
Confirmed that you get to choose 1 of ecobee3 Lite, Nest E, or some crappy Honeywell.

For those asking ecobee3 Lite or Nest E. Here's my $0.02.

If you use iOS devices, should be a no-brainer, get the ecobee3 Lite.
+Supports remote sensors (sold separately)
+Supports HomeKit. "Siri, set the temperature to 22C" work natively with iOS devices.

If you're an Android person, slightly tougher decision.
+You can use google assistant voice commands to control the Nest E but won't be able to control the ecobee3 Lite (control through ecobee app).
+No remote sensors for the Nest E (for now... I expect the (expensive) Nest Protect to be able to act as a remote sensor some day since it has a temperature sensor already so it should only be software update away from working)
+So do you value voice control of your thermostat more or having a remote temperature sensor (best to place in the room where you sleep)

Despite being an Android user, I will most likely be getting the ecobee3 lite.

Update Aug 31 9AM: Looks like the 2017 program is full. You can still register but you won't get contacted until 2018!
Thank you for registering for the GreenON Installations program! Due to high interest in your region, 2017 home installations are now full, but that doesn’t mean installations are stopping anytime soon. In early 2018, a GreenON Installations program representative will contact you. Part of process involves checking the eligibility and compatibility of your home with smart thermostats, and then, if you qualify, scheduling a home visit.

__________________________________

From the same folks who brought you "Save on Energy" coupons, you can now get a free SMART thermostat.

https://greenon.ca/en/programs/greenon- ... &type=Home

Update: only 100,000 units available for 2017.
All gone.

Who can participate
If you are a homeowner or renter living in single-detached, semi-detached, townhome or row home you are eligible to take part in the program. If you rent, you will be contacted about submitting a landlord consent form. Likewise, if you are an owner or manager of a rental property you will need your tenant's permission to participate. Residents living in multi-residential buildings are not eligible to take part in the GreenON Installations program. Existing smart thermostats cannot be replaced through this program.

What you can get
Sign up for the GreenON Installations program and a program representative will come to your home, install a smart thermostat and show you how to use it. He or she will also provide you with customized low carbon, energy-saving solutions for your home.

GreenON Installations program representatives will only visit your home when an appointment has been made. No program representatives will come to your house without your consent.

The GreenON Installations program offers three different smart thermostat brands. Availability of exact makes and models are subject to change.
  • Ecobee
  • Honeywell
  • Nest

There seems to be some concerns about the legitimacy of the program. Here are a few news articles that talk about this government program:

For the tinfoil hat folks

Not when the government is involved - sometimes they just like giving out free stuff.

The Green Ontario Fund is a not-for-profit provincial agency that invests proceeds from Ontario’s carbon market into climate actions that help people and businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use cleaner technology to power their homes and workplaces.

The information gathered from the in-home energy review will be used to create a customized home energy profile that will be sent to you within a few weeks. This report will help you understand your energy usage and costs, suggesting ways to save energy and money by participating in other energy efficiency programs.

Once your program representative has completed the in-home energy review, they will provide you with an information pack with other energy conservation tips and programs to consider.

I called to ask about the participant agreement but the lady had no idea what I was talking about. Signed up anyways. Can always refuse it when they come to install it.
