Ontario nursing homes feed seniors on $8.33 per day

Like I've always said, we treat prisoners better than we do seniors in this country. Unfortunately there's far more prisoner rights groups than there are people fighting for the rights of senior citizens. It seems there's no shortage of people who care about inmates, but few people care about the awful conditions many seniors live in. I've never been able to figure it out
Nursing home residents rarely get enough fresh vegetables and fruit, nutritious meats and fish — keys to health and happiness — because Ontario feeds them on $8.33 a day.

That is less than the amount allotted to Ontario prisoners, who eat on $9.73 a day.

Refugees get $61 per day for food with gold plated healthcare, but our own citizens get nothing!

This country tries to do good, but it forgets about it's own people -- just sick and tired of the people in charge.

Over $250 a month, a 4 people family will be $1000 a month. I won't complain.
I give up.

Trudeau is a con man -- look at how he gets people to swoon for him -- but tell me one thing he's accomplished for the "Middle class"?

Consider that seniors eat a lot less than prisoners somewhere in the prime of their lives. $250/mo for a senior vs. $292/mo for a prisoner seems reasonable on that count.

Also many old people choose to eat crap because that's what they like. Menus head towards pizza and bologna because that's what people want, and frozen vegetables because if institutions are going to throw out the vegetables people won't eat anyway, they may as well throw out the cheap ones.

You'd make a pile of seniors happy if they just put more salt in everything.

The problem is that some people demand the right to eat healthily, the homes can't provide dual menus, and because things have swung so far towards processed foods to make seniors happy, homes are now saying that everyone should eat healthily. May we all live long enough to be banned from unhealthy foods.

Seniors are treated like crap in Canada. But our government treats those stupid refugees with $30 meals to keep them alive.

Seniors are really really mistreated. They are disrespected by our government with their filthy actions to protect refugees rather than their own citizens.

Pathetic.

Aren't the refugees on welfare after a year? Max $198.50/person for two parents 2+ kids for all grocery, clothing, household needs, services.

Seniors are definitely given more resources.

That's a lot for seniors...My gf is a nurse in LTC and they have so much leftover food...Seniors eat very little

Why would we spend more when they don't even eat what they are given

Prisoners require and eat more food since they're not all 65+

You guys doing know Trudeau is prime minister of Canada right? He's not Premier of Ontario.. He has nothing to do with LTC

You understand there are levels of government in this country each with their own areas of jurisdiction?

I would hope that Canadians know the very simple basics of how their govt works...Since we even expect immigrants to know it...So our citizens should too

Also seniors get free drugs, eye exams etc ..How do refugees get better "gold plated" healthcare?

I think $8.33 is a lot per senior per day..They eat very little and how does the amount compare to other provinces? There's always food available including fruits at LTC homes but reality is 65+ and average age is much older at LTC ear very little..Can't use your food intake or avg intake/age of prisoners as some measurement of food required

Did you know cruises feed people on less than $13 a day! On a cruise with gluttony of people on feeding frenzy does it on less than $13 a day. http://www.cruisemarketwatch.com/home/f ... l-cruiser/

Also source of article is from dieticians group..That self serving professional wannabe group would have us all buying from whole foods and organic this and that as requirement...

Yup, it doesn't make sense to compare a group of elderly men/women (with significantly more women than men) who live a sedentiary lifestyle with a group of young men. Of course the former are going to eat less and thus cost less money.

There are a number of homes for seniors geared towards their level of health care needs. Long term care homes are facilities for high care needs similar to that of a hospital. Nursing homes also fall under this area. Then there are retirement homes/independent living facilities for seniors that don't require everyday care. There might be one nurse on site with a doctor available on call in case of emergency. The service level in these places vary greatly based on if it's a public or private facility.
