But I think it is reasonable for a family earning $160K+ to pay that off. And if tuition and residence is $25K per year, she would get OSAP. So it is entirely reasonable for you to pay off the remainder that OSAP does not cover and for your daughter to earn some money with a job and scholarship money.
And your argument about going to school abroad is irrelevant, she wouldn't get OSAP for that regardless.

Nope, if you have a family income of 160+, no OSAP for you, nada, zilch.
Again, nope, you can get OSAP to go to any school internationally that they recognize, and all the good schools are recognized. Harvard, Cambridge, MIT, Caltech, etc.And your argument about going to school abroad is irrelevant, she wouldn't get OSAP for that regardless.

Sorry, I don't mean to attack, I am not really certain of the OSAP rules.
But I just did a quick check with their OSAP estimator, and for a family with an income of $160K and no assets going to Queen's engineering living on residence, the estimator still gave me a $3.5K estimate.
Honestly, working during uni isn't that bad. But with a $160K income, I would expect that you have some saved up for your daughter, and even if not, it wouldn't be that big of a hit unless you aren't saving any money at all. With scholarship money and a part time job, paying off tuition is not unreasonable at all, in fact, that is what I did and most of my friends (although some got OSAP as well which helped them a lot)
Okay, but still, even if you get into any of those schools, you wouldn't be solely relying on OSAP because it would only pay a small fraction of tuition regardless. Most people I know who went to Harvard and MIT had to rely on LOC's and their parent's help without OSAP.Again, nope, you can get OSAP to go to any school internationally that they recognize, and all the good schools are recognized. Harvard, Cambridge, MIT, Caltech, etc._______________

Shrug, I just did the same thing on the site, and I came up with exactly zero OSAP but some microscopic amount of federal student loans that wouldn't even pay for beer. Maybe the absolute cutoff is $180k not $160k.
Paying off Ontario tuition qua tuition with a summer job, particularly if it's an Arts&Science degree, is probably reasonable. Paying the living expenses as well? It would have to be an awfully good summer job.Last edited by Anonymouse; Jan 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM.

That's true, but considering your family has an income of $180K, it is perfectly reasonable to expect you to pay of a significant amount of that too without being hurt financially.
Plus, scholarships really help. I know some people who were able to (because of their scholarships that helped them)_______________

makes sense i guess if you graduated in 2007 that makes this your 5th year (technically, you could have taken a year off or two)

Welcome to the real world of post secondary education when you walk out of the turret high in the sky in that castle of yours.
Lots of kids from true middle class families have to actually *cough* work *cough* to pay for their educations. And yes that doesn't mean MickeyD's part time through the summer. They have to actually get dirty and sweaty and work their butts off working 50+ hrs a week through summers. And frankly they have to make the hard choices between needs and wants. They may want to go away to school and live in rez but ultimately can't afford it.
The max from OSAP does not and never did cover the full cost of unregulated programs let alone living expenses for those programs.
The rest of the less privileged masses actually have to work....

True, but once you hit the magic 4 years out of highschool your funding should increase due to being deemed independent for OSAP purposes. That means OSAP will only now look at your income for funding and not your family income. This usually results in much higher funding for most students...

Sorry Setz, but it doesn't look like it...
http://www.ousa.ca/tuitiongrant/If you currently receive the Ontario Access Grant in excess of $1,600 for this academic year, you will not receive additional funds from this program. Those eligible for the Ontario Access Grant at between 30% and 50% of your tuition, the new tuition grant will not come in addition to the funds you receive from these programs. If you currently receive between 25% and 30% of your tuition through the Ontario Access Grant, you will be eligible for a portion of the Ontario tuition grant to top-up your grant to the full 30%. That is the total you will be able to receive this term from the Ontario Access Grant and the Ontario tuition grant combined is $800._______________
