Thanks OP, scored a YOW-ORD-NRT//NRT-SIN // PEK-ORD-YOW for around $1,050 at the end of March. A little more, as my outgoing is a W fare which had an available GPU space... I like using the Polaris lounges ;)

How many non-Chinese speaking travellers are actually booking their SEAsia trip with Chinese airlines?
Mainland China transit stories and travel with mainland Chinese airlines are mostly negative. Anyone here has any report to make?

Flew on a few 4 or 5 years back...absolutely no issues with language, everything was pretty straight forward.

I have flown Hainan twice trans-pacific recently and many others domestically in China and to other countries in the region (Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan), would have no worries with other mainland airlines these days. Better than US based airlines imho and avoids going through both ORD (frequent delays) and US customs (frequent rudeness). LONG gone are the terrible days of CAAC.

Language is not an issue and the cabin crews are usually great.

What to do during the often long layover of 12 hours or more?

Overnight layover in Beijing (free hotel) is a bonus, to get the jet lag at least a bit out. I went in to Wangfujing street and walked around tianamen (closed for Congress). Connection to SEA are not generally very good from YYZ. Just cooling my heels at HKIA waiting 10hrs for a Cathay flight at the moment.

Tough to beat points, I'll need another trip to Calgary... and then one to Singapore. Possible one of those two will have to be paid for without points... and expensed.
I aim to be inclusive and considerate of others in my posts. If I fall short of that mark, feel free to let me know in good faith, and where appropriate, I'll edit my posts. Thank you.

Click on the OP's link above, and as of a couple of days ago still available. Tried the sample date departing from YYZ and it went through to United at $494.
