Let me put it this way for you:
That pop up indicated that a cracked key has been used and MS detected it or the key was legit but has been abused.
Either way, you need a new product key.

Perhaps not. If OP used the key on the side of his pc a call to MS should fix it for him. WGA sometimes rears its head on ligit systems as well and a call to MS usually solves the problem. Even if he used his buds key as long as he still has his key on the side of his pc or has the box his cd came in with the key on it a call to MS should fix it.
If none of the above solves anything, sounds to me like he did have a genuine OS at some point so after each windows update session do a search in explorer (my computer) for wga, when the search is finished highlite all the files (three or so) and rename the to say abc. Then reboot, the wga nag should be completly gone. Now do a search for abc in explorer and delete all you find. You will need to do this with each windows update session.
Another option download the windows 7 rc and install it. This will give you a legit OS for almost a year before you have to think about buying another OS.

OP, you need to give more info than that. Like:
- Did you use a COA Key or Product Key when you installed Windows XP?
- More info on the disc that you borrow from your friend: Retail/OEM/OEM Manufacturer?
- Is your computer originally comes with Windows XP?
etc.
