I love how all people defending this say the mods will take care of negative comments... as if they have unlimited resources to police the forums.
The problems with the downvote feature have been fiercely debated for the last several years. All arguments for and against and all alternatives and adjustments have been put forth and considered over and over again. The fact that downvoting is now gone and that it took years to happen means the decision wasn't made lightly and without very careful thought. In the end, downvote defenders have lost. The battle is over. And that's that.

Well, the forums will degrade slowly initially and then sharply once peeps realize they can shitpost/troll/threadcrap/be-overly-rude/snide/etc at will [the level of tolerance to "bad" behaviour will increase so only really terrible replies/post will be handled].

Without downvote, keeping the upvote for replies does not make any sense. Peeps upvote disruptive replies all the time and it's as prone to abusing as downvoting was. In any case the inherent confusion of having a single metrics to qualify two independent concepts remains (thanking helpfulness vs agreement -- you can upvote to thank a helpful reply, upvote to thank a disruptive reply, or upvote to express agreement with a reply). A set of four variables (or fields) would be necessary for actually separate thanks(helpful)||no-thanks(disruptive)=downvote from agree||disagree -- the downvote was lumping disagreement and reprehensible(disruptive) [to call them somehow, succinctly].

Welp.

The decision to remove downvotes came after carefully reviewing feedback from multiple sources over a long period of time. It was overwhelming how many people wanted it removed and that is why we did what we did. Downvotes only existed for a little over a year while the previous Thanks system (which is now what the system essentially is again) had been around forever. There will always be trolling and other issues and the downvote system provided virtually no positive change towards fixing that.

It got to the point where the so called trolls and other problematic users didn't care about receiving downvotes and the only thing it accomplished was discouraging new conversation, especially with newer members, and thus more users became lurkers.

We may switch the system back to "Thanks" but that won't be until sometime next year. If you still want to provide feedback on the removal of downvoting please use our contact us page and we'll log that for if/when the conversation to bring it back has been reopened.
