For my epic 5000th post, I thought I would get some ideas as to why my overclock is not working. I recently installed Windows on my SSD, prior to that I had my CPU overclocked to 3.06GHZ with no problems. However, after reinstalling windows I can't get the thing to overclock above 2.4. I tried various settings and it keeps restarting without even going into Windows. Any ideas what is going on? My specs are Q6600, Gigabyte P35C-DS3r, OCZ 4GB. Thanks.

Checked O/C temps in BIOS? Maybe you jostled the HSF when you put the SSD in.

Just to clarify, you can set it to a higher clock in bios but it fails to stablize upon reboot? (i.e. your bios isn't locked or anything right)?
The fact that it doesn't work after installing Windows shouldn't make a difference. I'm assuming you already tried, but I'd factory reset the BIOS settings, then try to set your clocks again. If that fails, it might be a hardware issue_______________

Ya it fails to stabilize upon restart. It is not locked. I changed it to 9X333, but it just restarts. I tried resetting the bios, but it didn't work. Any other ideas?

Basic but easily missed:
See in another thread your memory is 800 mhz.
Check to see that memory multiplier isn't pushing memory speed past maximum?

Here are my settings:
9X333
PCI 100HZ
Memory is auto (1000)
Voltages are all +0.1V, and 1.2975 for CPU
I tried various settings and it does not boot with the overclock settings.

Almost certainly the issue;
If that is your current memory frequency (1000 mhz)

On my board I don't have auto for system memory multiplier (SPD), have to select through present multipliers until I get my maximum frequency. In your case memory maximum frequency is 800 mhz, if the other thread is correct. Change the SPD so that memory frequency is 800 mhz or less.
This BIOS photo is generic, may be in slightly different places.

Set the ram speed to be par with ur CPU MHz first then adjust it higher later if it stablizie.
U should have a setting of FSB
RAM 1:1 or ram MHz 667(333)

I thought that maybe I didn't put the thermal paste on properly, so I took the cooler off and applied an even layer of thermal paste and tightened the clamps so that the cooler is solid now. Still does not overclock over 2.4GHZ. Could it be the memory settings?

Have you done the (obligatory) "Load Optimized Defaults" from the BIOS since you assembled it? Is that Q6600 a G0 stepping? What speed is your memory rated for and at what voltage? Most DDR2 is pre-set at 1.8v but actually need 2.0-2.2v. Might need more voltage on the CPU as well. Also gigabyte boards have a bug where they can get stuck in infinite boot loops with a USB drive plugged in.
And just to confirm. Your PC loads into windows at stock, just not overclock right?

Those are some really low voltages for the Q6600, try pumping it up a bit. I've got the G0 stepping which is better for OC-ing, I've got it running at 3.5 GHz stable at 1.4V

Lower the multiplier (clock ratio) to 6x. Then you'll know whether the system doesn't like the overall clock speed (3.0ghz) or just the clock frequency (333mhz).
