Passport requirements to USA

Going south (US) for Christmas with my wife and 3yo. We all have valid passports, but they expire within 2-3 months from the return date. Should we get them renewed before our trip as I have heard they like having a 6 month buffer from expiry date.

CND are exempted for the 6 mths rule when travel to US, as long as your passport did not expired while in US.
I actually bought up this question to the US custom Officer while he was checking out passport last month when we flew to Miami.
