U didn't read??

CTFS Down-pointing Red Triangle WE will earn no rewards buying GC's at partner stores, even if those GC's can only be used at that same store.

Just don't do it

Why would you want to?

When you get 4% using the card itself, every time you shop there.

Unless you want to give it to someone as an actual "gift". Now there's a novel concept for a GC ... not known to most RFD'ers Smiling Face With Open Mouth

RFDers have every use case under the sun, as an extremely heterogeneous demographic.

But RFDers would buy GC's they intend to give as gifts where they can earn 4+% return

Just curious. I thought they would promote people buy their GC because it sort of locked people money

The reason i buy GC ( Canadian tire, Walmart...) is because we give GC to teachers as appreciation as schools semester end:)

I personally don't like GC, always worried fraud

  1. use Plastiq to pay CRA if hitting MSR
  2. Never use store CC at partner store to buy GC's with one exception...PCF MC WE at SDM. Anything else...please just don't do it
Ah. So PC Financial Mastercards get points for buying gift cards at Shoppers? Which category does it fall under?

I applied for the Cash Advantage yesterday and did not get auto-approved. Not sure if it's normal for Candian Tire but hopefully I hear back. Should I call them back after a few days?

Partner store accelerator. The WE tier gets 3x pts (30 pts/$1) and SDM has a base earn rate of 15 pts/$1, meaning you'd get 4.5% return in PCO pts.

I can't be bothered. Just cancelled my PCF WE this month. I couldn't even bother doing a BT given how low my CL was.

I don't have any fraud concerns with them.

But I'm not so keen on them, either. Because if you lose them, they can't be replaced. It's the same as losing cash Face Screaming In Fear

That's not so bad.

But you don't get the 20x points, for the regular Shoppers offers. The terms specifically exclude GC purchases.

@DrDoomsday ...

I trust you didn't super-inflate your $7K annual income on the application?

If you did ... maybe it's best not to call them. As you'll be questioned by a Credit Analyst. Just let the application lapse.

It's not a category bonus, it's for all spending with a PCF MC at a Shoppers Drug Mart.
[edit: not for GCs though, thanks @banker8 ]

So, personally I don't have a PCF MC, but I believe its earn rate at SDM is:
  • PCF Basic MC - 25 pts or nominally 2.5%
  • PCF Basic World MC - 35 pts or nominally 3.5%
  • PCF Basic World Elite MC - 45 pts or nominally 4.5%
The points are PC Optimum points, and nominally value is 1000 points for $1 when redeeming at a cashier at the Loblaw family of stores. Or, if you use them during a Shoppers DM redemption bonus event, 200,000 could be worth $300 in value.

I have always seen the ads for this PCF card, but always scoffed at it, never thinking to open it for myself. There's a current opening offer of 100,000 points (nominally $100 value) after your first $1 purchase, until Aug 6th. Certainly a lot lower SUB than I'm used to, but then again it wouldn't be a churn venture for me, far from it.

I thought the Cash Advantage doesn't have a minimum income requirement. I dunno. It was so long ago since I opened my CA.

I'm unsure, too.

Potentially if could be $15K, which is pretty standard across the industry.

Regardless of whether there's a minimum (hopefully for @DrDoomsday there isn't), the point I was making, is that it won't be a comfortable convo for him with the Credit Analyst, if he did happen to hyper-inflate it.

Hopefully he didn't. But if he did ... then it's best to let the application lapse, and die a natural death.

I want to know too. It only said you need employed or retired, so I'd assume there is minimum salary requirements? Like you said 15k? But on the other hand, employment doesn't necessarily mean full time

Yes, it'll be good to find out.

Even if there's a minimum income requirement, it may be based on household income, in which case it'll be plain sailing for @DrDoomsday. This shall be much higher, when factoring in his parents' income.

Although, from the questions he asked previously (when considering his application), I've an inkling they asked him to declare his individual income.

@DrDoomsday, please shed some light on the matter Electric Light Bulb

I wrote 10K for personal. For household, I had a bit over 100K after I included everyone that lives at my house.

For employment, I wrote part-time. For monthly house payment, I selected "with parents" and had 0 in that section.

My only other credit card is with CIBC with a credit limit of $500 since ~late 2018.

In terms of loans/liabilities, just OSAP.

Should I call in on Monday?

Whilst I could tell you, that wouldn't do justice to Tux's toil and efforts. With the excellent list of CC acronyms he created and maintains.

You'll find the answer to your question there, together with learning many other useful acronyms.
