I assumed that army surplus wool coats are like their blankets: heavy and itchy.
You must have never been to an army surplus store or went to the wrong ones. Buffalo's Uncle Sam Surplus store they have next to new Sterlingwear peacoats that look just like the ones off retail. I bought a brand new officer's coat last year and it was unused (rear center vent was not opened - still had the factory stitching on it). I do agree that the surplus blankets are itchy.

On the Sterlingwear.com website, their pea coats are listed as weighing 8 lbs!

Charcoal looks great on men. I’m not a huge fan of black as I think it’s overdone. Also dark blue is also pretty fitting on guys.

For women, light grey or even black looks nice. Although my personal take is women have more freedom to be experimental in their choice of color. It comes down to your own personal taste and for what occasion is the color fitting to wear.

Depends on skin tone. This is just reality as some colours just don't look well against certain complexions.

For men:
Caucasian -> Black, Charcoal or Navy
Brown -> Charcoal or Navy
African (except Kanye West) -> Charcoal or Navy
East Asian -> Black, Light Grey or Navy
Kanye West -> Black

For women, I would take the above but also those brighter colour pea coats like red and tan are also acceptable IMO.

That oatmeal colour doesn't look good on me 'cuz it washes me out. Navy is the most flattering colour for my hair and skin tone.

I bought the black peacoat, thought I could spruce it up with scarves/hats of varying color. Black wool coat looks good with either black or brown boots.

My 5-year old winter parka is also black. Next time I'll get a navy parka.

I used to wear navy peacoats back in highschool/college but will be switching over to black (or perhaps charcoal if I can find a nice affordable one) whenever I buy my next one. Not sure if it's age or I've overworn that particular colour, but navy doesn't doesn't look as flattering on me anymore and I've rarely worn black until somewhat recently.

I'd really like to get a nice mens pea coat in white or very light oatmeal, but haven't seen many places online that carry any in a style I like :/

When I first started wearing peacoats, I kept getting black ones. I guess my taste has changed, and now I mainly wear navy and charcoal peacoats. I don't know what it is, I just find when I wear a black peacoat, it looks too plain.

I haven't seen any in actual stores (or online stores) but think it would look interesting.
