Reviews are quite positive. Seems to boost the mood and energy and fight winter blues in the LONG LONG Canadian winter.
I am in for one.
WAS 119.99 at amazon.ca, now regular price

Best to just get a timer like those at Canadian tire (they usually go on sale for as little as $5) and connect your lamp to it. That's what I used to do in Edmonton and in the dead of winter when the sun rose/set at 9am/3pm IT REALLY HELPED.

I had something like this a few years ago .. gave me headaches. I'm sensitive to bright light. The model I had indicated that the light has to hit your retinas for there to be any positive effect. Waste of money IMO. Find a window and go sit near that.

Thats the whole point of these lights. Its for thick cloud covered winter days with very little sunlight. Late sunrises and early sunsets. reviews speak for themselves. They may not work for everyone (yourself included). But a lot of people find benefit in having these around. They are not meant to sit in all day. Its a quick light therapy.

FYI, If you get a prescription from your Doctor, most drug plans will cover a light therapy device (but best to check first).

I bought one at 150$ a year ago. I felt more awake everyday during the winter after putting a nearly blinding blue light in my field of vision for 30 seconds or so in the morning. Might get the same effect if you used other lights, but placebo or not, it works for me.

I used to do that by using a timer and setting a desk lamp on in the room to turn on 5 mins before the alarm. It doesn't gradually get brighter but it does the job. It is a lot cheaper because I had everything except the timer.

For a wake up light, there is also the Lighten Up. It works similarly to the Philips models, except you have to provide your own lamp. I purchased one around a year ago, and I haven't had any major issues.
It costs $39.95 + $6 Shipping for the programmable model, and $19-24 + $6 Shipping for the non-programmable.

Depends on what you really want there are waking up lights and energy lights that one can choose from. Philips has a short clip that tells you which one you need:
Philips video: http://bcove.me/jcjl7drh
For waking up, you will need this one:

For better energy you can choose from one of these:
