Picking shoe colour with a suit

I typically prefer black shoes with most suits (black, grey or navy blue). A rep at Moore's wants me to get a pair of brown (not even dark brown) shoes with my two new suits (both grey...one with a blueish hue, other with some brown). Getting a belt to match this shoe colour will be hard too. What to do? Personally, I would like a burgandy colour for my shoes...but they are hard to find....I see that most dress shoes are black, some are brown, a few are burgandy. I wear a size 12/13 (typically wide) so it's tough buying shoes period. Any burgandy/black shoe recommendations at under $200?

I hardly wear suits except for job interviews or when work requires it.

If you don't wear suits all that often, then why bother?
Stick to a pair of black oxfords and you're fine.
Brown shoes aren't as formal as black shoes would be and you can never be too formal for a job interview.
The main benefit from brown shoes is mainly from their versatility - you can dress them up or down a lot more easily than black shoes, but if you're typically not wearing suits on consecutive days then you're probably better off saving your money.

basically this. why buy new shoes when it's only worn for interviews?

anyway, imo, brown goes with everything except black and black only looks good with charcoal and black suits.

I agree with the statements above.

If you are looking for a nice brown or burgundy shoe, why not get a monk strap or slip on dress shoe? that way, you can wear it on more casual occasions and still look good in formal situations.

Thanks, but monk straps are not my style. But I do like that shoe from Cole Haan....too bad that they don't have it in a 13 wide.

Actually, I do have a pair like that moccasin styled dress shoes (Florshiem)....quite comfortable and long lasting when used sparingly.

Light brown with a gray (any shade) is a bit of a faux pas ...... rookie move .....

Merlot / Ox Blood looks fantastic with gray.

Black goes with anything .... and for the purpose and frequency of these suits, probably the way to go. Build the foundation of Navy/Gray suits with Black shoes first, and then you can expand your collection to whatever you like ..... hell, rock sneakers with black suit with the basting still sewn in .... if its your 11th suit, who cares
