Where can I rent a movie fast? In the BB days I was just driving to a store and get it, now all I see are these kiosks with very small collection in some stores. Online sites that I know have small selections too and some (such as Netflix) are stupid, they don't even allow to search for a movie. Netflix is also very slow

Netflix is slow? huh?
Here is what you should do - a) get a US spoof (unblock-us.com). b) get a netflix account c) get a hulu plus account d) get an Amazon Prime account.
That will give you access to basically every movie that is available for streaming. You can toggle your netflix country in unblock-us between Canada / US / England to see different options.
You can also rent movies from iTunes (get an Apple TV) but this seems expensive to me._______________

Movies are generally not available legally over the Internet for free. However there are certain exceptions such as http://www.hulu.com/. But Netflix works good for me.

What is the legality of watching streaming video in Canada from a "pirate" site?

I know it sounds weird but try your local library. They let you rent for free and some are known to have Blu-rays as well.
