Point & Shoot Camera Recommendations
Hi RFD,
I'm in the market for a new point & shoot camera. Something that particularly works well in a concert like setting (low light, movement, etc.) but something that isn't considered "professional". No detachable lenses, or lenses that exceed 75mm. I'm also looking for something with a decent video recording component built in. 720p >
Something for in and around $200.
There's a lot to choose from so if anyone is currently using one that they'd recommend, let me know!
Thanks.

You won't find anything really good for concerts and lowlight for $200. Probably the bet is the Canon 500 HS which is f2.0 at the widest lens setting of 24mm. If you use zoom in low light, the picture quality will get worse. It's actually on sale at some places.

If you add some more money, I'd suggest the Canon S95

Canon S95 or S100... a bit pricier, but the bang for your buck.

After using my Canon SX220HS for a few months now, I'm finding that their 1080 24p video is not to my liking - just not smooth enough. For this "travel cam" class of P&S, I'd now lean to something like a Sony HX20V 1080 60p, or Panasonic ZS15 for 1080 60i video. The ZS15 would be my preferred camera overall. But.... these are not really a "low light" cameras and it it not a small package like the Canon S95 or S100 but it does have a heck of a good zoom range.

I bought a used HX9V over a month ago for $200. It has amazing video and a long zoom. But it you are more concerned about low light pictures then a used s90 can be had for less than $200 (I've had my s90 for almost 3 years now). But the s90 has a shorter zoom and not as good video. For low light vidoe the HX9V is quite good but for photos not so good. But definitely buying used is the way to go.

kind of weird that the HX9V do better on video than stills. looks like the camera is aim more at video side.
where is a good place to pick up a used HX9V? i heard good things about its video capability from EOSHD

I bought mine off of Kijiji. The advantage with 1080p video is that it is only 2mp so if the camera does good downscaling then you will see less noise at high iso vs the 16mp full size image. Currently Sony and Panasonic are leading in this area for video.

thanks for your speedy response!
yeah, i see cleaner footage than a 60D in EOSHD video, and i do realize Sony & Panasonic is the leader in video....Canon is not as good...Canon is just the leader in marketing., lol....

I don't know what is happening at Canon. You would think they would also have an advantage due to their video experience, but so far only Sony and Panasonic have been able to transfer all of their video expertise to cameras.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but what would be recommended for a decent point-and-shoot camera to take on a Eurotrip? I'd say the same price range

I'd give the same advice. S95 (or S100 if you can afford). This pocket sized camera really shines with a F2 aperture!

+1 on the S100
I've been using mine regularly ever since I bought it. Truly pocketable and has full manual controls for great flexibility.
Be sure to pick up and carry an extra battery or two. It drains pretty quickly if you have the GPS setting on and are taking full HD video.

+1 on the S100
I have had both the S95 and S100. Both take great photos and are very versatile. The battery advice is good for the S100.
Even the older S90 would work well.
They are as others have said truly pocketable.
