My portuguese is *quite* rusty in reading/writing, but here goes.

Axas = no idea
que e bom ter um filho = that it is good to have a son
tar legal = no idea...you sure that this is the correct spelling?
num pais = depending on the accents, num pais could mean "in the country"

Anyway, sorry I couldn't have been more helpful...perhaps if I heard someone speak the phrase I could better translate it (it makes a big difference)

It means :

"Do you think its a good idea to have a kid, while not legally in a country?"

The first word "axas" was misspelled, as it should be "achas", and the last word "pais" should be País (with a capital P and an accent over the "i") as "pais" means "parents" but "País means "country". Thats why most people here translated it wrong.

BTW - I was born and raised in Brazil and portuguese is my first language.

Are you sure you need to capitalize the P? Don't know about Brazilian Portuguese, but Portuguese Portuguese doesn't require a capital P for país.

But I think you should capitalize the P in Portuguese.

(I'm just picking bones, hope you don't mind. Well done in the translation. I wouldn't have thought of the misspelling!)

BTW - Portuguese (not Brazilian Portuguese) is my 4th language. I learned it about 15 years ago and I have forgotten a lot of it. I learned it because I needed to write a test to become a Portuguese citizen.

...and that would be why the original sentence was difficult for me to make out.

Portuguese is my first language as well...but I've forgotten much of it over the years (can still talk to people and hold a conversation without much issue, but reading/writing for me sucks).
