Roys Peak is a fantastic mountain trail that rewards you with fantastic views once you reach the top. You have to earn it though, as it is uphill the entire way, climbing about 1,300m in elevation over 8km. It's about 6 hours roundtrip.

I had hoped to start the trail EARLY in the morning, but sadly I couldn't quite pull myself out of bed early enough. I still hit the trail in complete darkness, but probably only made it about halfway when the sun began to rise above the horizon. Still got high enough for some fantastic views!

Once you finally reach the top, you can take a break and enjoy 180 degree views across Lake Wanaka from atop this iconic perch just below the summit:
