I don't think you will find something that's easier (buy more time via internet), better coverage (same as Rogers) and cheaper than Speakout. Worst case cost is $25/yr (less than a latte/mth).
Their unlimited data is also excellent at $10/mth...you can turn it on for one month and then off the next.

My kids use the Speakout prepaid and I have no complaints at all. It's perfect for an emergency phone.

Hi,
Speakout is the only 1 that has a 365 day expiry for amounts < $100. Does anyone have an older Rogers phone they can give you for cheap? Then you only need to buy a 7-11 simcard & you're on your way. Or buy a Nokia C3 from Rogers, BB or Future for $90. Activate the phone with Rogers, use it for 1 month with the $30 activation credit, then buy a 7-11 simcard to continue on your way. The reason I'm suggesting the Nokia C3 is because it has a keyboard & is WiFi capable

I should have an old, rather, really old Nokia kicking around that I should be able to unlock for free online. I found a writeup on how to unlock my not so old k1 razr and it worked perfectly, so I may also just get a used one on kijiji or something. Thanks for the advise tho
