I submitted two rebates for the Win8 Lenovo $15 Visa card. I did not get either of them. Looks like the web site is dead now too. rebate4u.com.

Has anyone that upgraded to Windows 8 tried upgrading their P580 BIOS to the latest Windows 8 64-bit that was released a couple months back?
I decided I wanted to install Win 8 on my machine and thought to check out what drivers Lenovo had on their website for the P580.
So I found a new bios update from a couple months back that was for win8 64-bit. I installed the new bios and then started having really annoying issues.

Every time the laptop would boot I would get a black screen with text saying something like :

Start PXE over IPv6... [press esc]
...
Start PXE over IPv4....[press esc]

then it would end up with it saying it couldn't boot.

I managed to go into the bios and disable the "optimized for windows 8 64-bit" option which seemed to fix it(also something about legacy OS support) and I was able to boot properly. But wtf? Why was it doing that crap in the first place?

I ended up just going back to windows 7 in the end (I was dualbooting so I simply deleted the new windows 8 partition I made).
For some reason I could not figure out how to properly set up my NFS server on windows 8.

I use Hanewin NFS server on Windows 7 and it's extremely easy to set up. Configure the program, open the ports in windows firewall. Done.
Doing the same in Windows 8 did not work at all and I couldn't figure out why.

I know this thread is old now, but I was wondering if anyone is still using this laptop today?

Over 4 years later and mine is still going strong. Running 24/7 as a media server,

What do you mean? I am basically using it like a NAS. It runs Sabnzbd/Couch Potato/Sonarr as well as a an NFS server. I also have a few external hard drives attached.

I am still using this as my main computer....amazing longevity! Thinking of putting a SSD in it...my friends/family think its quite ridiculous of the long few minutes load up time which I have completely gotten use to.

This deal made me think if I needed an upgrade....but this is 100% still fine for my needs.

An SSD would really make a difference. That's the only upgrade I've made. Swapped out the drive for a 128GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD.
