Problem installing power supply on my Sandy Beach motherboard
I have an "older" Ultra 500w power supply that I bought from Tigerdirect a while back.
The cable that connects to the motherboard has 4 less stubs than the socket on the motherboard.
It also has a 4 stub plug which says it's for P4. But the motherboard has a 8 stub socket.
Could I still use this power supply with this new motherboard?

Assuming the +12v lines can handle the components that will need the power, it should work. Look in your motherboard manual, it will tell you which pins on the board to connect up these older PSU's to. They aren't "necessary" per se, the 4pins on the ATX power connector are for additional PCI-e power and the extra 4 pins on the CPU power are just that, for power hungry CPU's.
Otherwise, you could buy these things (not necessarily at this store, just examples of the cable converters)

Of course, you do have to weigh out whether you would spend the $15 for these, or connect up your PSU to your setup as is without, or just buying yourself a new PSU like these from ME that will be better overall

If you can afford it, I'd suggest getting a new power supply. You wouldn't want a set of new components to be fried by an old PSU that has something catastrophic go wrong.
I'd be worried about something like that, anyhow. :-)

Thank you. I also have a brand new Antec 430w earthwatt lying around. Do you think it'll be powerful enough for a 460gtx video card?

Yes. But list all the components in your system just to be sure. GTX460 can pull about 140w on full load by itself.

Newbie
I use a GTX-470 with 420W ps, no problem at all. It is also depending how many components you put onto your system.

Aside from the fact that you are having difficulty with the installation (Ultra's are not very reliable) I would shelve that psu and go with something with more ummph and quality (Corsair,Seasonic..). I don't think I would take my chance with Ultra blowing up and taking my mobo or cpu or..

Thank you for all the advice. It looks like that I may need to buy a new case as well! I just realized that my case has LCD panels that are powered by the 20pin connector so that if I get the 24pin power supply it wouldn't work! Is there a workaround for it?
If not, what would be a good looking case and power supply to get? Cheap but has to look classy. Like a Lian-Li but without the price.
