Problem trying to connect old CRT to Netbook?

I have two old CRT monitors. I have also have an Asus Eee netbook which I'm trying to connect to at least one of these CRT's. The Asus specs says it has a 15-pin D-sub monitor port which supports a standard VGA-compatible device such as a monitor.... I notice on both monitor connectors, I count 14 pins. Also the only way it will fit in the Asus port is to turn the connector upside down from what I connect to my old desktop. When plugged in, neither the Asus or monitor seem to recognize any signal between them at all. Is there some other connector I can get from an electronics store to make this thing work? I'm not much of a tech person, but thanks in advance for any advice. I won't be using this setup too often, but once in a while I'd like to have a screen size bigger than the 10 in. one on the Asus.
