The first thing you should always do is password protect your system, if you have the fingerpritn reader, even better.
Next, never let the laptop out of your sight at school.

Why on earth would you even think that? Sorry, but that's dumb.
If you're not ready to chain it up, then keep it on your person at all times.

I dont even leave my laptop out of my sight at school and I dont live on residence. I always ensure that it is me or a friend that is looking after it during a washroom break. If no one is around, I take it with me (obviously I have a carry bag).

never leave your laptop unguarded. people steal everywhere. Professors get their laptops stolen and they post on bulletin boards for it back with cash reward and promises not to tell police because there was 20 years of research on the laptop.. people just break in and take it..
and on the laptop, of course, you have important info/priceless possessions like pictures

Get a proper lock. IMO its not being cheap, its being smart. I always back up my pictures, and priceless stuff in case something like that happens.

get those Targus Notebook cable lock, and ALSO, get that Targus Notebook alarm too.
Here it is:

And u shouldnt worry what others think. Cuz, its ur property, not theirs.
And, if ur going to the washroom, just ask the person next to u to watch the laptop. Assuming u dont sit in the washroom for like an hr.
To get these: TRY EBAY. Futureshop and other stores, have jacked up prices.

Would you rather be a cheap bastard or a sucker that lost a laptop?

Look tell your roomie that its not that you don't trust him, its just you don't trust anyone else that might let themselves in or people who might wander in when you or your roomie go out to the bathroom and an opportunist comes in and takes it
