Provide SIN to apply for a job?
Just a quick question, i'm in the beginning stages of applying for a job, and the employer is requiring me to provide my SIN on an online form, with all of todays identity theft and fraud, is it legal for them to ask me this through an online form? if i refuse to give it online but not once i've started the job is that also ok? any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe they need your SIN to verify that you're legal to work in Canada. It's also used on your tax forms.
Most of the jobs I've taken have asked for my SIN after I started... so maybe send a polite e-mail to the company stating you'll provide your SIN after you get hired?

They don't need your SIN, but it's not illegal for asking. You can refuse to give it though.
And no, SIN does not prove that you can work in Canada legally. To work in Canada legally, you have to be a canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have a valid employment authorization issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Though they do need your SIN after you're hired so they can supply the info by they fill out your T5 for Revenue Canada.
NB: Anyone can get a SIN and it's not for working in Canada.Alot of people who don't work have a SIN. It helps for getting tax refunds or tax credit (ie filling out those tax returns: you know those who are eternally on welfare, never work, but always seems to get a tax refund somewhere even if they've never paid a sent into society.)

Some companies require candidate's SIN as they do a background check on them.

They may need it but you don't have to provide. Of course, they don't have to hire you either.

personally I wouldn't. Sure you want to get hired, but the line needs to be drawn somewhere. the SIN is a pretty valuable number, I only give it out on a very specific need to know basis.
