PS3 Media server that works with MKV!

Just thought I would post a note to point a media server written specially for the ps3 in java.

http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

if you have tvversity working, then you don't have to try this. But since I could never get tvversity to play any mkv files no matter what I did, I found this.

you need to get java runtime from java to run:

http://www.java.com/en/download/

been reading more and I don't think you need a codec pack, so I took it out of the post.

I already had mine installed though, so don't know if it works without it or not.

won't count as bandwidth that your ISP marks down

If your PS3 and computer are connected to the same router then sharing is pretty easy

I just use Windows Media Player 11 - On Ps3 go to search for media servers

On PC/Computer go to options and go to Library and enable sharing from Unknown Device (That's ps3)

If your using WMP11, does it transcode the video on the PC side and stream it to the PS3? And if so does it play all forms of Xvid/DivX and subtitles too?

WMP will not transcode. I don't think my old PC (Athlon64) would have to power to do so, I use gotsent to convert MKV to MP4. It just changes the container, so it doesn't take long to convert, even on my PC. :D

WMP should play all xvid/divx fine, not sure about subs.

Just tired this out and couldnt find a single file it wouldnt play, its a bit goofy the way it creates a new folder called transcoded for the files that need to be transcoded instead of just doing it but all in all i think this is great. I need to work on some of the settings though to get this to work well and i need to look at it a bit more but all in all so far i think its fantastic.

It plays ogm and mkv files with no issues at all. It would have to transcode it though as the ps3 cant play those itself.

I am starting to like this more other then the few odd problems. It keeps on disappearing on my ps3!

scanning for media server fails to find it, I find I have to restart the server to get the ps3 to see it again.

other then that I like that I can finally play my mkv files and such!

and yes to play MKV it has to transcode since ps3 doesn't support playing them.
