PSU Blow Out?

I think my psu blew out but how would I know forsure?

Running a game, suddenly shuts off. I reboot, it does the startup check, cpu, RAM and my 2 hdd seem to be recognized. But when I get to the windows loading screen, it shuts off. Safe mode/ normal/ restore to last working config, doesn't matter.

Does this seem like a PSU blow out? ><

Nope. I've had 2 psu's blow and they pop nice and loud. Once blown you will never see any power. It doesn't mean it's not faulty of course but what you're describing sound more of a motherboard issue or maybe something is overheating.

I've seen one fail and it produced a nice little cloud of grey smoke-dust shooting out the back along with a very noticeable pop.

If it'll POST their's no reason it shouldn't load the OS.

No BSOD at all during the shutdown? You can test it by putting a Linux distro on a USB key and running it in live mode, see if that will run.

Sounds like something crapped your Windows more than anything. Faulty mobo you wouldn't get that far. If you have a Windows CD you can always boot into recovery mode and do something like chkdsk c: /r and it will fix whatever badsectors you have.

Edit: After opening it up because it somehow seemed quieter, the fan on my cpu heatsink doesn't seem to be spinning anymore. Do I have to buy a new one or can I just put a small fan blowing right into the open case? If thats a bad idea, is it recommended to not use comp at all even for web browsing, to avoid potential damage to the cpu?







Ok after a while, I guess it cooled down, I was able to successfully get windows to load up. Ive been playing D3 for extended periods before this happened though. Whenever I run D3, I can play for 20mins-1hr before it just shuts off again. Is my gfx card just overheating or is this sorta permanent dmg(buy a new one).

I've played games like SC2 and LoL for extended periods but never had any gfx problems. I believe I got a HD4850, which should meet the requirements given I've logged a solid 14hrs into it now.

Download Everest, core temp or any temperature monitoring application. Entirely possible it is overheating and shutting down.

CPU heatsinks are cheap, thirty forty bucks for a decent one.

Your CPU is overheating. You need to replace the fan immediately.

My rig was a bit o\ced. Installed SpeedFan and temps were insane! At 3.1GHz, with case open, heatsink broken fan taken off and a house fan blowing on high right into it, temps were CPU-71C and NB-98C lulz with only mozilla running...These temps def were the cause for the shut offs.

Turned it down to 2.1GHz, cpu volt to 1.2 and tightened the heatsink screws a bit more and with the same home fan blowing right on it, temps have been stable. CPU-40- 50 with D3 game running, NB-70C. I was advice on another forum to not even turn on the comp with the heatsink broken but with these slight mods, I should be okay until the replacement heatsink comes no?

Your elaborate solution should be fine as long as you can keep the temperatures in check. I would look into getting a new heatsink/fan ASAP though.
