Q: Driving with US plates in Ontario

Apologies if this has been asked before. One of my relative lives in Michigan and is moving to Europe for a 1 year work assignment. He is willing to loan me his car during this period and will drive it up to GTA (where I live).

My question is that can I drive a car in GTA with Michigan number plates. The car's insurance will be from Michigan and in my relative's name. Are there any things that I need to watch out for. Any advise or guidance greatly appreciated.

Most insurance will not cover you for out of state use for an extended period. The legal way to do is to temporarily import the car to Canada and have it plated and insured here.

The illegal way to do it is just to drive it and if there is an accident, lie and say you were on vacation.

That's kind of hard when the owner is over seas and the driver is a resident of Ontario.

I was hoping that instead of car staying in storage for a year, I would be able to drive it. But from replies it seems, its not possible,

I would say it is okay.

1. people does that all the time. US Business people drove here to "work" for a long time. Some of them even parked their cars here when they need to fly to somewhere else for business. These people are executive of the companies. They are not paid as a worker here. They may stay here for extensive period of time but may fly back for weekend with the family. Hence, they leave their car here. e.g. our VP. He did not mean to stay here for a long time initially but things happened.

2. Nobody knows when the car left US and how long the car have stayed here.

People lend their cars to people from another country all the time?
