Question for Any Tax Return Experts
Hey everyone.
I'm filing my own taxes and have a question
(probably a dumb one, so please don't flame).
Under Property Tax Credit for Home Owners, where do I get the amount for real estate taxes paid and school taxes paid?
I own my home, but I can't find anywhere on my city property taxes where that amount is broken down into how much I paid for each...
Or am I off my rocker, and I don't even get to apply for this credit?
Thanks in advance everyone.

Move to a new city?
My tax bill (from the City of Mississauga) shows the split very clearly...
Contact the city's tax dept and ask where you can get the info.
This credit is meant for people with low or moderate income...so it may or may not apply to you.

My property tax statements have always broken it down. Now that I live in Oakville I've never seen such detail.
Perhaps yours wasn't broken down because you live in a community where there aren't both a separate and public school system? Just a wild guess...

low or moderate income? ... Probably won't count for me then, especially if they take it as "total family income". I work part-time roughly ($30K/year), and might be able to claim it, but I doubt it. My husband works full time and makes much more than I.
Thanks for the help anyway.
I don't think I'll bother trying to claim it.

Your property tax is the whole amount paid and that is what you put on your provincial tax credit form. This form takes into consideration family income so you must add your husbands net income and yours into the calculation.
hope that helps

I'm only familiar with the Ontario credits. One spouse will claim the Ontario credits for the couple (property tax credit for the couple and sales tax credit for the couple and dependent children). If one spouse is 65 or older in the tax year, he/she would claim the credit. This is explained in the Forms 2004 booklet on page 6.
If you are in a different province, check the booklet for your province or CRA website or call the tax office.
