you can get your g2 now if you want, there is no set limit on how long you have to wait in between g1, g2 or g i believe. once you get your g2 you can drive alone as long as you have insurance...well u can drive without insurance but thats a risk you'd have to take

after G1, wait 1 year to do the G1 road test to get your G2 license. If you have driving school certificate, you can take G1 Road test in 8 months.
After you get you G2, wait 1 year before you can take your G2 Road test to get your full G license.
With a G2 license, you can drive alone but not a single drop of alcohol in you. Also with a G license, there is some alcohol tolerance allowed.
With a g2 license, if you are a young driver, I believe you are not allowed passengers after 12. Please check the MTO website, i believe young drivers is define as anyone under 19
This is copied from MTO
New drivers must hold a G2 licence for a minimum of 12 months before they can attempt the G2 road test. At this level, you have more privileges because of your driving experience. You may drive without an accompanying driver on all Ontario roads anytime. However, you are still required to:
· maintain a zero blood alcohol level while driving;
· ensure the number of passengers in the vehicle is limited to the number of working seat belts.
Our Graduated Licensing System has been a resounding success in reducing death and injury among novice drivers. Ontario research shows that new teenage drivers are almost three times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious collision when they are carrying teenage passengers. In fact, research shows the more teenage passengers, the higher the risk.
To further protect youth on our roads, effective September 1, 2005: the number of young passengers that teen G2 drivers can carry will be limited from midnight to 5 a.m. as follows:
· Initially, G2 drivers 19 or under can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under.
· After the first six months, and until the G2 driver earns a full G licence or turns 20, they can carry only three passengers aged 19 or under.
The passenger restrictions do not apply if the G2 driver is operating a motor vehicle after 5 a.m. and before midnight.
These restrictions will not apply if the G2 driver is accompanied by a full "G" licensed driver (with at least four years driving experience) in the front seat, or if the passengers are immediate family members.
Thirty-one jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S. have some form of teenage passenger restrictions in effect.

okay so if someone HAD their G1 and it expired (after 5 years) and they just re-wrote their G1 test (written) so they still have to wait the 1 year (or 8 months with driving course) before they can complete G2 road test?

I don't know for sure in that case - I know that if you let your G2 expire before getting your G, you have to start over at the G1 (i.e. you can't just go for the G).

No, you can take G1 exit road test as soon as you pass the written exam.

Did this ever get confirmed?
I let my G2 expire recently... and it will be upsetting if I have to wait a full 8-12 months after redoing the G1

I can confirm it. My G2 expired and I had to start over from the beginning. I completed the entire process from G1 to full G in four months, and managed to snag myself a nice 6/6/06 dated license in the process.
