Everyone has their own tastes but Raging Bull is one of my fave movies. It is a really uncompromising character study and very few actors would work as hard as De Niro on the role (I heard he threw himself down stairs to get the feel of a beating) or take such an unflattering role. The movie was also one of the first (as far as I know) to show how brutal the sport of boxing was. The movie is also uses boxing as a metaphor for male anger and violence.
When I first saw it I didn't think much of it, but I was only 15 and as years passed I grew to really admire it.
I really enjoyed Rocky but it's a completely different type of movie, comparing the two is like comparing Bambi to the Exorcist. Rocky is a good old fashioned root for the underdog movie whereas Raging Bull is about the ugly side of boxing and human nature in general.
Rocky is a crowd pleaser, Raging Bull wasn't made to be liked, it's more of an artistic statement. Other Scorsese movies are like this - Taxi Driver, Last Temptation, King of Comedy. Lately he is making more crowd pleasing films - Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, Aviator. Raging Bull is Scorsese at his most uncompromising.
