We had the same situation and went bigger, not so much for practicality or functionality (though a bigger hood fan is, all things being equal, better) but because of the layout of the kitchen, the bigger size actually looks better....

Range hoods
If you are looking for a wall mount range hood - go with the same size.
If it's for Island kitchen - go with the next size. At least this is what the guy from www.kitchenhoods.ca told me.
Have a good one!

That's interesting - do you know why? Just because it isn't necessary to spend the money on something larger, or is it related to airflow?

We're going to go bigger, with a 36".
a) for increased airflow
b) for esthetics... the range hood is between 2 windows, lots of room between the windows but adding cabinets would look funny and cramped. So 36" is just better to scale.

Larger = better.

Range hoods capture smoke/grease, then vent it away. Range hoods are mostly unable to vent smoke that escapes the hood. Larger hoods can capture more smoke/grease and therefore vent more of it away

thanks - that's what I would have thought. So I'm still puzzled that he was told to stay with a smaller hood for a 30" stove. I assume they just mean, larger was overkill.

I'm not sure, personal preference?
I like the look of a 36" hood over a 30" range. But you'll have to factor your cabinets, etc and see if you can fit such a large hood.

Perhaps the 36" would be overkill on a 30" range because your hood should be able to capture everything that comes from the range. Both my range and hood are 30" and nothing escapes. Depending on the amount of smoke, grease, etc, the higher settings of the hood captures it. In other words, considering the FUNCTION of the hood, a 36" hood for a 30" stove is not necessary. However, if the 36" is more APPEALING to you, well, that's a different story...
