Re-taking G1 written exam before G1 expires?

Hey everyone,

So my G1 is expiring next month and I don't have the time/prep to take the road test to move to G2 before it does. At the same time I'd prefer not to let my G1 expire before re-taking the written test since that leaves a gap where I don't have ID. Is it possible for me to go "re-take" the written exam right now while my current G1 is still valid, and get a new G1 license? Or do I have to wait until my current one expires?

Thanks in advance for your help! I tried looking this up everywhere but the only results I was getting were for options once the G1 actually expires, which is not what I'm looking for.

In the past, I've heard you can call the ministry, tell them you don't have time to take the road test, and get a short extension/grace period [to take the exam]. Best to give them a call and see what your options are.
When given enough time, all threads on RFD can and will go off on a tangent.

As far as I remember, the extension is not too long either.
