Real Property Appraisers AACI/CRA programs in Toronto
Hello All,
Any feedback about the the Real Property Administration (Accelerated Assessment/ Appraisal) joint UBC/Seneca College program would be very helpful from those who have their AACI/CRA designations or whom are currently in the industry in related capacities.
The accelerated program is 8 months with 2 mandatory field placement components. To program alumus or AACI/CRA mentors, how would you rate the level of performance of students during the field placements? Are the placements typically paid/unpaid?
Having had a short assignment working with appraisers, continued pursuit of opportunities in this field with the possibility of obtaining an AACI designation is an option that I am seriously considering.
Again, any feedback would be most helpful.
Thanks,

i got my cra last year and know the process
im also familiar with the pgcv for univ graduates for aaci/cra
it's much easier to complete the program cra/aaci if you're already working in the field, somewhat...
note: i dont know about seneca's program, i completed mine through UBC while working full time....but if you're doing the courses full time through Seneca then maybe they have a different approach.
pm me for info

The seneca program is great. Real job opportunities afterwords. Couple of things to keep in mind, 1) you need a university degree to get your |CRA plus addinional courses to get your AACI. A further enhancement to your career in the assessment field would be having your paralegal license, but you can pursue this once you are in the field, at least in the private side. Interesting and challanging work with excellent growth potential for the right candidate.
What is your background, ie. what school have you completed to now, and I'm assuming you completed either a diploma or degree if you are looking at the accelarated program.

Sounds like you have some personal experience with the program. Would you mind sharing more about your take on the course material and placements? How helpful is the program in assisting with connecting its students with employers and are they typically paid or unpaid?
Would it be advantageous to use this towards a BBRE for those who have already completed a degree or rather as an entry point to the field and in being designated?
The 8 month accelerated Real Property Administration (Assessment and Appraisals) program at Seneca appears to be the pre-AI designated programs to obtaining either a CRA/AACI designation. The highlights it seems are 1) the mandatory field placements 2)that some courses are crosslisted with the some of the ones necessary in the AI program and 3) are recognized by UBC's Certificate in Real Property Assessment and can be used towards their (BBRE).
Thanks again for all the feedback and in sharing your experiences.

The placements are mandatory as you say and unpaid as they are only 1 or 2 weeks long. They are more of a job shadowing. A lot of people do get job offers from the placement they do, if they are impressive. The asssessment field is very small and most companies, both private and public support the Seneca program as a majority of people in the field have come through that program.
As far as the courses and their equivalancy to either the BBRE or AIC, you are correct. The seneca program gets you a leg up in pursuing both of these. Its been over a decade that I took the program so I can't tell you specifically what the equivalencies are now. I'm working toward my BBRE now, actually just started this year so it will be a while yet, but some of the courses I took 12 years ago were exempt.
The majority of people graduating RPA go on to work in assessment with about half going to work for MPAC, the other half for either private consultants or in-house real estate departments. Good earning potential and great long career for the right people. If you have any more questions, feel free to pm me.

Thanks for sharing this info. As potential graduate of PRA program from Seneca where can I get an entry level position in Toronto? I just looked at Workopolis by searching Real Property Administration/Appraisal and got no jobs available. I tried to find available position in this field in the Job Bank of Canada and it's the same - no job in this field. Where people getting jobs after graduation of this program? Thanks in advance for your input
