Go to bestbuy/futureshop, try them both. See which one fits you the best.

D3200 has better image quality and dynamic range.

Buy an used Canon 60D and 50mm f/1.8 lens.
I'd recommend that over the Rebels for the better build- it feels better in your hands and is a very capable camera.

IMHO, a fixed 80mm equivalent lens on even the bestest best camera ever is a poor recommendation for someone looking for a general purpose DSLR. The kit lens range of 18-55 is the best general purpose focal range or else every manufacturer and their dog wouldn't be producing a version of this focal length.

The Nikon D3200 for $680 is the better of the 2.

A DxoMark sensor score of 81 puts in far above anything else in its price range.

D5100 with 18-55mm kit lens.

Best Buy has it for $750:

Futureshop for $630:

Get it at Best Buy, it will be just under $700 after PM and taxes.

It's a great little package, that camera has some nice tools up its sleeve and image quality rivals that of my D7000. A much better value than D3200 in my opinion.

If you're just starting out, I suggest getting a used Olympus e-pl2 for about less than $400. You can learn all the basics with it then decide if you want to move up to a full DSLR.

If bokeh/portraits are important for you, you could venture to get a used full frame camera Canon 5D classic (600-700$ on craiglist) + 100$ 50mm f1.8 lens for a start. Later add Canon 85mm f1.8 (or more expensive 100mm f2.8 macro or my favorite - 135mm f2.0L).

This is a good alternative to the used 60D. I had one myself- feels better built than the Rebels and it's a full-frame. Makes very pleasing images.

Nikon D5100. I traded my D5000 in earlier this year for it and noticed a big difference! Awesome camera... and I love the swivel LCD. Great image quality and takes decent video too.
