recommend some tax software (not Intuit)

Hi I am looking for some new tax software this year. Previously I have used Taxwiz and Quicktax (both are Intuit programs, any others I should know about?) to do my taxes but I have been thoroughly annoyed with their lengthy activation process and lack of support for their poor products. The straw that broke the camels back was that I have recently learned that they are continuing to exercise shadey tactics by cancelling support for old subsription programs in an effort drum up new business. Therefore, I have deciced to look for a new tax program instead of supporting those jacka$$es.

Coles notes: Can anyone recommend a user friendly tax program?

I just did mine with GenuTax.. its super easy to use, and when you finish, you can look at it in the print-preview.

The cool thing about the print preview is, it displays it out with the actual forms.. so you can get THOSE forms for free on the revenue canada website in PDF format, and just print them out and copy the values from the proper boxes in GenuTax.

Or buy it but meh

Try it out, I had to submit 3 T4's this year, as well as OSAP/rent/education credit... blahblahblah

It was all covered in the program, its free to try and hell im getting a great return this year.

I still use quick tax.. Takes all of a minute to activate.. And is still the easiest program to use.. Costs more, but nothing else compares.. I have friends that bought all of the competitor programs this year, and everyone of them will be switching back to quicktax next year..

Are they switching back because quicktax was easier to use? I used quicktax last year but if other tax programs are cheaper but perform the same functions, I feel no need to pay the extra just for the name.

Do these other programs allow you to import quicktax files from last year? I'd like to change if possible, but if only quicktax imports my last year's files, I don't have much of a choice. Otherwise there's quite a bit of retyping to switch to a new program.

I have been using QuickTax for the last 5 years. I usually borrow it from my friend since you can install it on two computers. This year I picked up a copy myself off ebay (then I found a cheaper copy but I paid already). It is by far the easiest software.

I tried Taxcel out and I hated it. It's built on top of excel.

Sorry for the late reply (just ran across this thread again). But that is the exact reason. Quicktaxs easy step is the best.. All tax programs pretty much do the same thing, but I prefer not filling out forms and just filling in some fields.. For me its worth the extra dollars to not waste my time, and my friends have since learnt the same thing..

We as a collective bunch have been using quicktax since the beginning (when it was wintax).. We used to share a copy between about 15 of us.. I assume similar sharing occured between others, so product activation became a must..

Now that the deadline is looming, and I am tardy as usual, I'm wondering how people have made out with their various tax softwares for the 2004 returns? Any last minute advice?
I have been using TaxWiz for the past 3 years, but am open to suggestions for a better choice. This year I have a tiny bit of "consulting" income in additon to my usual salary, so I will need to do things like CCA (Dell deal!) and expenses for the first time.

Yup, this is what I used. Simple and fast. Not hard to figure out at all, and let me do as many returns as I wanted for $8.

I don't know what the big deal is about QuickTax. Most people have fairly simple returns - hell, I did all my taxes by hand up until last year. QuickTax holds your hand the entire way - I guess if that's what you want, then go for it. (Or, understandably, if you have an actually complex return).

wow, definitel will have to check this out next year. Been using quicktax for the past few years with no complaints, this year my brother in law decided to buy TaxWiz, probably b/c it was cheaper. All i can say is it SUCKS big time. Could tell after a few minutes of use. In fact it's so bad that it doesn't even seem to carry numbers from the worksheets to the lines it's suppose to export too! Definitely not worth the money!!!!

EDIT: just tried taxcel to double check taxwiz since i don't trust taxwiz. Thought it wasn't bad, but wasn't as user friendly as I was expecting. btw, how do you spit a T slip between spouses in taxcel? Couldn't for the life of me find a spot to enter the allocation percentages.

Ufile worked very well for me. at $20 bucks for 10 returns, it's cheap in comparison to many others.
