Recommendations for accomodations on a budget in HK

I am looking to get some feedback on where to stay in HK. I will be travelling there late November for about 3 weeks. I have researched some hostels, just wanted to hear some personal opinions and experiences you guys have had while staying there! I am looking for something along the lines of $50-$80 or so per night. I will be staying with my gf, so about $25-$40 per person. Just want something comfortable, clean, and safe. I don't need something terribly cheap, but don't want to spend $150 a night on hotels neither.

Usually if it's clean and safe - it's not that cheap. I think you'll be hard pressed to find something for $50/night.

Last time I was in HK, I stayed for a month in a hotel - regular price was $1000HK/night, but if you stay for a longer period you should be able to negotiate a better rate.


Perhaps look for something outside of main HK - in the New Territories.

There are a lot around that price range. Go to http://www.kayak.com/hotels and do a search with the dates you're going.

Hi, I'm sure a lot of people here on RFD would know a lot more than me when it comes to Hong Kong. I've only been there a couple of times. I went to Hong Kong in May and stayed at 4 hotels in your price range. There are a lot of hotels you can choose from. I was surprised to find room prices there cheaper than in Toronto.

I didn't stay at any hostels because it was hot and I wanted my own shower, AC and bedroom. Most hostels also seemed to be in Chung King Mansions and that place didn't look all that safe to me. Chung King Mansions is in an awesome location though. Since there are 2 of you, you can get a hotel room for about the same price as a hostel.

I stayed at the Anne Black YWCA, Ibis North Point, Bridal Tea House Hung Hom, and Bishop Lei. Anne Black was the cheapest. You can get it for $27/night for Nov/Dec and it isn't bad - good area, 2 twin beds, large room- except for the BEDBUGS!!! My cousin kept on scratching herself and after a sleepless night, I left her there and checked into another hotel.

The Ibis North Point is near the North Point MTR station and across the street from a bus terminal. Very small rooms, lots of wear and tear, no free wifi, room with view of the harbour. You can get it for $60/night.

Bridal Tea House had a room the size of a walk in closet. You open the door and basically jump on the bed. Almost no room for your luggage on the floor. It had free wifi, but it only worked in the lobby. The room was clean and you can get it for $44-$53/night. It is near the Hung Hom train station but also in an area with a lot of funeral homes.

I liked the Bishop Lei the best. It is in a nice residential neighborhood in the mid-levels. I liked the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong but I also liked to stay somewhere that was nice and quiet. You can get there by escalator from Lan Kwai Fong or by bus/taxi from Central. You can get it for $73/night or so for Nov/Dec. I think I was upgraded to a suite, not sure but my room was pretty spacious. I had a living room and a separate bedroom. Free wifi and floor to ceiling view of Hong Kong.

Look on sites like Hotels Combined, Expedia, Agoda, Kayak etc for deals or maybe see if you can get a discount from the hotel directly if you are staying for such a long time. You might also want to consider some hotels a little further away but still near a MTR station since you can probably get a larger room for a cheaper price.

At this price, try looking for the The Anne Black - YWCA. Go to Asiarooms.com and search for some. They are around $60 a night.

Avoid all hotels at Chungking mansion. You may feel uncomfortable with the sanitary conditions there.

Many websites I have searched does not allow bookings over 14 days.

May I suggest you check out site for Star Guest House, Operated by Charlie Chan. Clean, reasonable, shower/bath, friendly, felt safe and close to all the action and easy to get to and from airport. Great directions on line. http://www.starguesthouse.com./

You're probably better off staying in an actual hotel as opposed to a hostel though, more room!

I was trying to save some money so I was shown a room by a friend of a friend of a friend at Chungking Mansion. The 20 minutes I spent in there were the worst 20 minutes of my life. It made me more than willing to pay the extra $100/night to stay at a decent hotel.

Few people will be able to stand the sanitary conditions of Chungking. Not really worth it. For about $40 more, you can get yourself a nice 4 star hotel at Hotel Jen.

I tried Ramada HK, it is in Western District, 10 minute to MTR by hotel shuttle, close to West Cross Harbour Tunnel and Bus from airport just across the street, they have long stay program which can go as low as 2800 HKD a week in low season. Hotel is not that luxury but should suite your need-clean/cheap comfort. Google it and check out their web page.

try nathan hotel.. stay there last year, room is very nice, modern and comfortable. only thing you might not like is no tubs.

Got mine from expedia for less then 90$ last year.....

Thanks for all your responses guys! After doing some more research, I think due to the economy and the swine flu, hotels should be pretty cheap at this time of the year.

I'm thinking of bidding on priceline for some hotels. Have any of you ever stayed at the Cosmopolitan? My friend suggested it to me as a lower priced, but still 4-star hotel. Pics of the rooms from the webpage looked nice. I think I will avoid anything in the ChungKing Mansions after wiki'ing it. Looks pretty sketch haha, although the hostels in there looked pretty clean.

If I can get a hotel for about $70/night, that would be a fair deal. I'll let you guys know what I find!
