Redhat, Ubuntu, Slackware... which one?

Hi, I'm considering to install Linux in my home computer, but can't decide which one, Redhat, Ubuntu, Slackware or something else? ... any opinions? . thanks. (P4-3.0, 1G memory, ATI 9600 pro)

Ubuntu has a Live CD option (where you can run the whole OS from the CD), and than choose to install it with a click of a button later. I've installed it and it had excellent compatibility and was very easy to use.

Yea, I 2nd ubuntu if you just want to run something, just to run something.

If you really want to learn, I'd suggest gentoo. It taught me a lot about linux, although it was really hard on me.

ubuntu live cd was a life saver for me. I had a notebook harddrive die on me in june and because I didn't have much money at the time, I used ubuntu live cd for 3 months straight, just to do work and save everything online. it got me through 2 months of university.

Definitely Ubuntu (or at least something Debian-based) if you're just starting with Linux .. it's the easiest on the brain.

This is why I hate Linux. There are too many distros.

Give FreeBSD a try. I think it is a far superior system. If Apple can use it, so can you.

That being said, Gentoo is modeled after the FreeBSD ports collection.

If you have to go Linux, then try to stay mainstream. Fedora or SUSE has the most support. Chances are, any other flavour will have you looking for dependancies when you are installing applications

I had Redhat. Fedora, Gentoo and Debian on my desktop(tried Openbsd, it sucks badly on a laptop). For me Debian is the best, and the only difference is the package manager. RPM suck ass.

Used slackware upto version 9. but since I've found ubuntu, i haven't touched slackware.

SuSe is the best distro for me too. I'm a Fedora Core convert. It pissed me off big time that it had no support for MP3 and I had trouble including my own plugin downloaded from a site.

Also FC5 had no NTFS support so I couldnt read my Windows partitions.
