Q: What is the Environmental Handling Fee (EHF)?
The Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) is an environmental fee or levy that is to be added to the purchase of all televisions, computers, computer equipment and other applicable electronic devices in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Ontario, PEI, Manitoba, Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The fee will be used to cover the cost of collection, transportation, storage, processing and disposal of electronic waste.

Q: Does the Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) apply to online purchases?
The Environmental Handling Fee also applies to all online purchases that are shipped to Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Ontario, PEI, Manitoba, Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Q: What if my shipping address is different to my billing address?
For example, if a parent in Ontario goes to an online store and orders a laptop for their child who is attending University in Alberta and they have the order shipped to Alberta then the purchase will be subject for the Environmental Handling Fee for Alberta, not Ontario.

Q: Why am I paying this environmental levy/environmental handling fee (EHF)?
This environmental levy/EHF supports various electronic diversion programs in participating provinces in Canada. This levy/EHF applies to all new purchases of designated electronic items. The fees support the various programs to recover and reclaim old electronic items that are currently entering the waste stream. These programs essentially help pay for the safe disposal of old electronic products.

Q: Is this a tax?
No, it is an Environmental Levy or Environmental Handling Fee. The fees collected go directly into the various programs that handle electronic waste and processing.

Q: Who gets the money?
The Source and all other Retailers are required to remit fees related to designated products to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA), Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES) and the Electronic Products Recycling Association for British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador directly.

Q: Do discounts on product sales apply to the Environmental Levy/EHF?
No, the fee is the same regardless of the purchase. It is based on the fee categories, which depends on the size or type of the product.
Q: Who can I send my comments about this fee or if I have questions about the recovery program itself?
If customers have questions or concerns they would like to express regarding the fee and the program it supports, they can contact:

Q: What happens if I return the product?
If a product is returned in accordance with The Source return policies, the levy/EHF will be refunded.

Q: What happens if I exchange the product?
If the exchange is for a similar size TV then the levy/EHF will not be affected, a straight exchange will take place. If the exchange involves a different size TV, then the difference between the two levies/EHF must be paid or will be refunded.

Q: What if I buy the product outside the province and have it delivered to the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, PEI, Manitoba, Québec or Newfoundland and Labrador?
The levy/EHF is applied to all designated equipment that is delivered to the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, PEI, Manitoba, Québec or Newfoundland and Labrador regardless of where the item was purchased.

Q: What if I buy the product for delivery to another province that has no levy/EHF?
If the product is purchased but the pick up or final purchase is in another province that has no levy/EHF, you will not be required to pay the levy/EHF.

Q: If I have Native Indian status, do I have to pay the levy/EHF?
Yes, applicable GST/HST will be charged on the amount of the levy/EHF.

Q: Is there PST on the levy/EHF?
Yes, applicable PST will be charged on the amount of the levy/EHF.

If more people had just driven to their local goodwill/value village/salvation army/talize etc and donated some of these then we might not have this issue.

Easier said than done. A year or two ago I tried to drop off a CRT monitor at Good Will and they would not take it. I took it to the closest community recycling centre and dropped it off for free, which I believe you can still do in Mississauga.

That is a fee. Not a tax. Therefore its not going in the tax statistics.

So who said we were taxed too much ?

Just to clear something up:
For Alberta:
•Displays under 30" (including TVs and monitors) $4.00
•Displays over 30" (including TVs and monitors) $10.00

You've got a hole for 30" monitors. Would I pay 4 or 10?

The site provided clears it up:

30” screen and larger: $10 dollars

So I'm going to pay 10 bucks and I'm going to quietly weep about that travesty.

Just thought I'd clarify that a bit.

Absolute BS.

You pay this fee when you purchase the product.

You pay ANOTHER fee when you take it to the Recycling Plant (Oshawa Recycling Plant charges).

DOUBLE DIPPING BY OUR GREAT GREEDY GOVERNMENTS!

So what do you do?

#1 - sell it on Kijiji
#2 - dump it in black garbage bags should your municipality uses black garbage bags for garbage

My old laptop was out of commission. I just used a hammer ... smashed it into pieces ... put the pieces in with the rest of my garbage ... on the curbside it sat to be dumped.

DOUBLE DIP. Sorry. No way.

just curious about the so called "eco fee." we paid the eco fee and it was also taxed by the government, have you guys noticed it? I just found out when i read ur forum and immediately search for my receipts and whallah, it was the price of the product you bought + eco fee * HST = total amount we should pay.
We have to shell out some form of fees or tax or payment and the gov't taxed it too? I know some people are thinking it's not much for a single consumer or for one product, but take a moment to think, how many people are using electronic products nowadays? i don't believe that each household won't have even one. How much money are going to the recycler plus the money they earned from selling the products that can be recycled to the third world countries? To cut the story short, we are being taxed also on the eco fees that are collected from us. It is also a kind of taxation. Some people said it's not a tax, it's a levy. For me, it's all the same. We are being taxed on the taxes that we paid. And so, the tax collected on the tax is going to the government contrary to some people saying, "it's not going to the government but in fact, it has a portion (tax on the levy because they added the levy first to the amount we bought then multiply by 13% hst). I agree with some of our members here "DOUBLE DIPPING."
Sorry for this unsolicited opinion. But I also have the right to voice out what is right and wrong. We, the consumers are burdened much by these taxes over taxes. Do you guys know that We are also taxed on the profit margin of the products they sold. the higher profit margin added the retailer make, the higher tax we pay. i.e. a pack of cigarettes of the same brand have different prices among each convenient stores even those of the gasoline stations. Thanks guys for reading my post.
