Registering laptop before International Travel

Hi, I'm travelling to asia, hk, manila and other places this sunday. I want to bring my laptop to store digital pictures. I hear that you should register your big-ticket items (like my laptop) before you leave, to avoid getting charged GST at customs. How do I do this, and what's the procedure? Any forms I can fill out prior to doing it, or anything I need to bring like receipts?

You can do this at the Canadian Customs office. You fill out a card of your items with serial # & model. They stamp it and you keep the card with you (don't loose it). When you return to Canada and if Customs asked if any of the items were purchased overseas show them the card and that's it.
