Check the insurance... Civic and Corolla would be most expensive to insure... You can get Subaru for that money.... I wouldn't max it at 3K, leave some money for repairs. Tires also very important for the winter driving... these alone could cost you $500-$600.

Love your choice, great car including the echo.

I never felt safe driving these reliable economic boxes.

Go for full sized sedan or SUV. You need maximum protection when your car or other vehicals go out of control in slipper conditions. Saving gas not worth your safety and passengers safety. Try to have at least avg size vehicle.

Under $3000?
Yeah you can get an 01 or 02 for around $3k. It'll be a pig on gas and not reliable but you could drive over Mount Everest in one of those things.

Tercel or Echo are good choices.

The sleeper choice (literally as well as figuratively) would be to look for a car that was popular with older folks like a Malibu or the Buick equivalent. Cheap parts, cheap and easy to fix, cheap to insure. Older folks do less klicks, usually maintain the car and certainly don't drive it hard.
Harder to find online unless the kids are selling it for them, you tend to find these through friends, families and co workers.

A car has to be safe in the winter. Life is precious than cheaping out on cars of 1-3k

I have a 2000 Acura EL, manual, that I park outside in Edmonton and rarely plug in, and it hasn't missed a beat since I bought it new. But its rear and front defrosters are terrible and it is dangerous without winter tires. My 2002 Accord V6 was an awesome winter car. Both are cheap and not hard to find.

If your car is to expensive to be driven in salt - you have money. If you have money, buy something cheap for the winter - Elantra, Versa base Jetta- you can afford it. If you don't have money, and look for $1000 beater - stop acting, and just drive that Corolla 4 seasons.

Buy on condition rather than deciding in advance on a particular make or model. Look for a front-wheel drive sedan which has been well looked-after - a well-kept Cavalier is a better bet than a million-mile rusty old Corolla for the same price. Budget for some decent winter tires.

Of some of the suggestions, the Tercels are too old now, as for the Echo I agree with the comments above - it is only suitable as a city car, if you go on the highway then look elsewhere. I drove one for many years and it was scary (I'm not exaggerating) on the highway in winter. A mid-size or full-size FWD sedan is a great beater.

There's not too many around, you will never find it. I recommend the Pontiac Firebird... they are cheap and reliable, seen some with over 380,000km on them.

these are all stupid responses

So much better can be had

03-04 accord 3k
04-06 mazda3 mazda6 3k and under
02-05 civic 3 k under

These guys telling u to look at tercel and echo have no car buying skills. It's called negotiating and working with a 3500 price tag to 2500.

Not finding a 1000 car and paying 1000
