Reliance wants to charge 470$ to remove their tank

Do I have to pay this?

If I just uninstall it and leave it in the driveway, and tell them to pick it up, can I clean my hands of this stupid rental?

What does your contract with them state? This should be clearly outlined.

You can remove it yourself, but have to drop it off at their designated drop off location.

If you don't want to pay, then deliver it to them yourself.

Firstly, welcome to the weird and not so wonderful world of rental appliances. When you have completed your dealings with Reliance, be sure to tell your family, friends, neighbours, random people on the bus, dog walkers in the park, etc., what an absolute bunch of scum sucking douchbags Reliance are, and never, ever rent a furnace, air conditioner, water heater, or anything else from them. They are one notch above Payday loansharks.

That said, you need to determine what exactly they are charging you for. Usually it's broken down into two things; termination of service fee, and removal/disposal fee. (There are other aspects, but it sounds like your tank is probably past its Best Before date, and you've probably already told Reliance to take a long walk off a short pier.)

You can avoid part of the removal/disposal fee by having whomever is installing your new tank disconnect the rental. Your installer may or may not be willing to take it back to Reliance's authorized drop-off depot, and if not, you will need to get it there yourself. DO NOT CALL A SCRAP COLLECTOR TO PICK IT UP, AND DO NOT LEAVE IT OUTSIDE WHERE SOMEONE COULD TAKE IT. If you do, Reliance will try and charge you for the replacement cost of a new tank. (This is of course, absolute BS, but they are, after all, scum sucking douchebags).

There is a tonne of info in the Great Water Heater Rental Scam thread, started by Yours Truly, right here in the Home and Garden section. Smiling Face With Open Mouth

So

0$ cost if I drop the water heater at their location
470$ for them to come take it back
700$ to buy out (4 year old unit with no warranty)

I guess I'll have to shop around to see find there are any installers that will return the old one.

I'll check out that mega thread you linked.

Not sure. I signed my contract with National, but for some reason it got switched to Reliance.

Consider yourself lucky that it's free to drop it off at their location. Most people are on contract and would be forced to buy out their tank.

$470 might sound like a lot but labour in Canada is expensive, and removing the tank is actually more complicated than people think it is. It probably takes 30-45 minutes, including putting it in the truck, so depending on how far you are from the depot, it can easily be 1-2 hours of work. Given that, and that Reliance is obviously going to charge more than a random Kijiji technician, $470 is high but not ridiculous.

Most installers will help you put it in the garage but you'll still have to lug it back to the depot yourself, which you can do with any mid-sized SUV.

We did it ourselves. I certainly wouldn't pay $470 for them to do it, but I can understand why they charge that much.

I am, without question,100% agreement with everything else you said, except this part. I realise your intent wasn't meant to be inflammatory, but it rankles me when I hear this. Just say "labour is expensive", and leave it at that. Otherwise, it just perpetuates the myth.

Sorry, I'm just a bit sensitive. (It stems from having to explain to clients that I have to put food on my plate.)

I apologize - the reason I said that was I believe most people in Canada, and especially RFD, are not native Canadians, and tend to compare labour costs to what is it back "home".

they gave me one price $700 to buy it out, but i did not ask if its cheaper if i do it myself? but i have a feeling the $700 and change is just to "release" me from the contract and i stop paying monthly rental. im 10 years in on a 15 year rental,. shaking my damn head
