Replacing a PSU (that has started whining and grinding) and recommendations
Hoping someone could give me some guidance on replacing a psu.
I have an HP Media Centre PC (HP M8330f) and the fan in the PSU has started to make a grinding whining sound. Otherwise it runs great and does everything I need.
When I look at the product information page, the PSU is listed simply as '300w'. Does this mean it should be replaceable with any standard psu (are they standard?).
Also, does 300w seem underpowered? Does anyone have any recommendations for a good value psu to use with this pc?
I've replaced one of the HDDs with a higher capacity one and have installed a wireless networking card so I don't think changing the PSU should be too difficult.
Thanks!

PSU sizes are standard.
Get a 400W power supply. If you intend to add a highpower graphics card ($250+) then 500+W is recommended.
Good quality PSU tend to run $50. (Good = techie approved.) There is no crime replacing your existing with a $20 PSU (IMO).
(Below is a great deal for a GREAT PSU on sale.)

There are several different PSU standards, ATX, FlexATX, SFX, to name a few. From the pics of the HP M8330f I got through Google I'm 99% certain it is uses an ATX power supply (the most common type).

Or you can fix it by adding a drop of oil to the fan bearing in the PSU.

+1 Try some oil or grease first and if that doesn't work, you could replace the whole fan. You will need to do some dis-assembling, and possibly some soldering if you're replacing the fan in the power supply.
