Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and we need help! We're looking for the best gift ideas, places to go, things to do, ways to propose, and other neat ways to celebrate Valentine's Day. We want to hear from YOU!

After all the ideas are in, we'll pick the best of the bunch and publish them in a series of articles in our Features section.

I used a red display board from Staples/Michaels (8.49)

I bought a piece of white bristol board at Dollarama (.50) for the center where things will be eritten.

I also bought a few vday/heart/love scrapbooking things from Dollarama.

I wrote a little love letter and put it in the middle.

Here is an inexpensive Valentine's Day gift idea.

Buy a pad of red or pink Post-It Notes. Write lovely thoughts, poems, quotes, or even words like "I Love You," "You have the key to my heart," etc. You may want to write these thoughts on the underside of the notes.

Then, surprise him or her by sticking the notes all over. You can stick them on a large surface, such as a vacant wall, vanity mirror, etc. in a heart-shape pattern.

Then, as your recipient begin to peel, he or she can turn over to read out each of the quotes.

Call me classic, but I find flowers and a really nice dinner work very nicely. The dinner, however, may cost you $50 per person. Really depending on what place you go to at what time.

Whatever the gift, Dollarama has a pretty good selection of Valentine's gift bags, wrapping paper, and tissue paper. The tissue and wrapping paper I've bought and used myself, very hand and good value!

some food for thought:

- make your gift if you a) have enough time to do a good job b) are good at it - other wise, pay someone else to do it, trust me, she will appreciated a nicer gift than something messed up.

- cooking for the lady is a great way to show her you care, and then remember to clean up after.

- plan a day in the mountains (if you are near them), nothing beats a quiet nature walk in the light snow (nothing that will break too much of a sweat). In alberta, there's tonnes of nature paths that are very secluded and perfect for you to enjoy the scenary.

- exotic flowers! don't just go with dozen red roses, a woman like a man that's adventurous, so pick her something that's got orchids, lillies, austra-maria's, etc, then sit back and watch as she swoons over the bouquet.

Create another account on RFD;
Start a FS thread for something u wanted to give to your significant other.
Fake the whole thing and tell your loved that you found a deal on it on RFD.
Settle the deal; but ask him/her to pick it up for you cause you're busy.

Surprise him/her when they show up.
I suppose if you wanted to do the whole love thing with a ring, you'd say something corny like, "the sale is final and there are no refunds".

This actually happened to a friend of mine and we were all impressed and jealous at the same time!!!!!!!

This would work if you had some privacy in the house!!!
There were classic pink rose petals along the path leading to the bathroom... where there are candlelights and bubble bath waiting for her. She showed up in sexy lingerie (didn't know about the guy's rose petal plan) and a trench coat over it. They both really enjoyed their Vday!!!

Last year's Valentine gift to my bf only cost me $1 plus taxes. Last yr, SDM had easypix promo where you can use their online service to make a Val day card for free (notecard size with envie) so I uploaded a photo and typed in a message - bf loved the card. And I went to a chocolatier at Manulife Centre in TO (I think called Leonidis) and bought 1 heart shaped truffle that was wrapped in foil and they put it in a cute little cello bag with seal for me - only $1. I think the gift was so cute and he loved it.

I'm using the easypix service again this year. I think $2.50 before taxes for a 5x7" card. They provide Valetine borders to choose from. I created the card during xmas and I am still waiting for notification to pick it up at one of the SDM stores that I chose. I wish the quality of the print of the photo was better but I enjoy customizing and typing in personal messages on the front and inside the card. Still cheaper than Hallmark and Carlton.

This year, I will try to make choc truffles for the first time. Bf will be giving me some amaretto and creme de menthe from his liquor cabinet. So I'll be making amaretto, creme de menthe and plain truffles for him.

For the first time, I am organizing a Secret Valentine by mail with friends. I have 8 people participating. Limit of $10 plus postage. It'll be fun to get a thoughtful Val day surprise in the mail and have something to open on Feb 14th.

And so on...then she can use them whenever/wherever.

I have arranged a kid swap with a GF. Her kids will be staying at my house for Valentines (we're baking) so she can have a romantic evening with her s/o and on the weekend my three will be at her house to reciprocate (dh is away during the week)

Not costing either of us a penny and I am sure both nights will be quite eventful!
