That seems reasonable and as you say, roaming can be done from Canada. The forum post you quoted suggests that one has to do ALL of (a), (b) and (c). But subsequent posts on that thread say that a single text every 6 months (30p from Canada) will be enough. If so then that's about $1/year to keep the SIM alive. (Hint: set up a recurring reminder in Google Calendar for every 5 months.)....
Thanks for the link to zone a pdf - I looked on giff gaff website and can't find a webpage that talks about zones. I was wondering what countries are zone b. Can you post the website that this pdf link comes from?

Start with Roaming with giffgaff, then select Canada. That will show roaming charges in Canada.

Now click Keep me with you. That shows all countries in Zone A. From what I can see that covers most of the developed world outside the EU.

For other countries try typing the country name or modifying the URL. I used Switzerland to find Zone B: https://www.giffgaff.com/data/giffgaff_ ... _ZoneB.pdf

Hello all, I will be going to USA for 7 days and require a min of 1GB data (don't need any minutes or txt). I have done some research, please let me know if this is the cheapest option.

T-Mobile
Buy SIM Card from Amazon Canada - $12.99CAD
Sign up on Prepaid data only plan 2GB - $10USD
Total cost, $26CAD for 2GB data. Anything cheaper?

For a one-time only need you've probably found the lowest cost. If you plan on visiting the US at least once a year then consider Roam Mobility - 1GB Valid for 7 day - CA$22 tax included(*). You have to get a SIM that costs $10. But I got mine for free based on a thread on RFD.

The best thing about this plan is that the SIM expires only a year after the last time you use it. Also you can do everything online from Canada before you leave so you have service as soon as you arrive in the US. RM uses the T-Mob network so no difference in that regard.

I recently tried a new new service for the US only. The company is called Freeup Mobile. https://freeupmobile.com

They have a free plan that gives 500 Total Minutes OR Texts and 100MB 4G LTE Data per month. There is no international roaming. Calling international (including Canada) is pay as you go. The rates are here:
https://freeupmobile.com/support/international-calling

The sim is $5 plus taxes but I signed up when they had a promo for $2 for the sim. It runs off the AT&T network and you get real minutes (not VOIP like Freedompop). They do have an app where you can access your account and "Rewards" In order to maintain the free account, the terms state that you "must log into the Rewards app at least once per month and take one action to maintain Free Talk & Text Plan."
https://freeupmobile.com/support/terms-and-conditions
This could consist of taking surveys, using their retail links or printing a coupon.
I just log in and print a coupon from the desktop site. You get $0.24 for every printed coupon so I plan on just printing a coupon every month a hope this satisfies that requirement. I'm only on my second month so we'll see how this goes. For a $2 investment, its worth a try for me.

If anyone is having problems ordering a sim from them directly, I believe ebay and Amazon also sell the sim.

Here is more discussion from SD

Anyone have any idea to get a Hong Kong sim card with Hong Kong number to use in Canada, all the banking in Hong Kong need a mobile number to verify transaction.

I remember looking at Lycamobile when I was planning a trip to France (specifically Annecy area) but I ended up getting a sim card through Lebara (https://mobile.lebara.com/fr/fr/) with free shipping to Canada. When I got to France, I topped it up with 2gb data I think (it was like 15 euros in 2016) and paid that through PayPal. I can't comment on Lycamobile but maybe you could check out Lebara?

Perhaps not. I just got an ad for a free RM SIM on my smartphone. The fine print says the deal expired 31Dec18 but it's still worth a try.

Get a Free USA Travel SIM Card and/or Get a Free USA Travel SIM Card (two different URLs.)
Definitely not! I ordered a couple of Roam SIMs on 13Jan. I just got emails saying that they've shipped.
