Rogers:APN3CON, APN3SOC question

Whats the difference between these 2?

Currently on a $25 3yr 500mb bb plan on my 8900.

If i were to change phones and get a smartphone such as e71, x1,dream or even an iphone, will it work right off the bat?

When i called in asking the possibility of switching to a non bb plan they said i would have to renew another 3 yrs data plan for it to work ? :O

My understanding is that APN3CON is only for smartphone plans switchin to bb plan?

By default the internet APN is unblocked. The internet APN is used for Smartphone, the USB stick and some dumb phone as well.

But to be able to get the internet on your blackberry then you need the Blackberry data option. Off course if you have a Blackberry data option, then you're not bill for the usage from the Blackberry APN. However you will get charge for the usage from the other WAP or Internet APN.

Oviously if you plan on getting rid of your Blackberry then you won't have any other choices and you will have to give up your Blackberry data option. But it kind of suck the fact you have to renew for 3 years just for changing the option. It doesn't make any sence as anyway you're still paying them for the internet.

One is the actual code...the other is a bastardized version thereof.

APN3CON is the actual code.
APN3SOC doesn't exist. "SOC" is the generic term for the various codes that Rogers internal system operates on. at least that's what I think it is? LOL??


Data plans are twofold.

regular (ie smartphone)
This plan won't provide bb functionality., so to gain it, they'll remove what you have and give you the equal counterpart for a BB*.

blackberry
This plan will give you functionality for a BB...AND without issue or hazard, to a regular smartphone...OR to essentially ANY eligible device.

*The reason this apn3con came about is because Rogers started mucking around with annually recurring and disapearring data plans (Enter 6Gb). People who had a SMARTPHONE discontinued data plan on their accounts who now wanted to use a BB had 1 option, to LOSE their grand-fathered data plan and go with a crappier $30/1Gb BB plan. BUT, one genius discovered that deep in the GUTS of Rogers SOC repositories, lied this GORGEOUS SOC, aka the APN3CON which allowed ANYBODY to gain BB functionality on ANY Smartphone data plan...hehe., yes even the old $20 communicate value packs which had 2mb or 5mb of useage LMAO. SO, it quickly became known that a quick and easy fix for people with the smartphone 6Gb who now wanted a BB, was to simply "tack on" this soc. VOila. It neither affected or harmed the 6Gb in any way, rather ONLY provided Exactly what the Cx was asking for.

Voila.

SO...long story short., the best plan to have is the 6Gb BB version, because it is hard-coded. No need to worry if you have a BB or not., your data will work fine. You have a BB data plan. If you want a BB or if you want a regular data device., you can just power up with your sim and you'll have no issues.

There is also the unlim on device version which is $10/month and ONLY eligible for non-smart/non-bb devices...but that doesn't apply to you (OP) so I originally ignored it. Putting it here for completeness.

I have non-BB 6GB data plan, using it with an iPhone. I tried calling Rogers this morning to add APN3CON to my 6GB dataplan, since I want to play with a BB device.

Specifically I asked to add this SOC to my account without removing my current dataplan. He rep said that even adding the code would not allow me to access the BIS or BES, and that switching SIM cards out of BB will cause my BB to become locked, requiring admin reset?? Needless to say, I said thanks, goodbye.

Should I just keep calling to find a rep who will add this? Or do BB sim-swappers face these account lock issues?

I think the rep was just trying to scare you away from adding APN3CON on your account.

I had to go through a few reps before I finally got a rep that would add it on for me.

By the way, I can use BIS and swap SIMs without any problems.

I spoke to the Data department (1-866-931-DATA) but you might have better luck by asking Retentions.

I can switch SIMs and use BIS without any problems.

Just to clarify (sorry, this is a noob question):

If I add the APN3CON code to my 6GB iPhone data plan, I understand that I will be able to use the BIS / push email features on a blackberry that I got.

Now, that's all good. My question is - can I use a 6GB iPhone data plan which has the APN3CON code attached, with my iPhone [without getting extra charges]? OR, do I need to remove the APN3CON code once I go back to using an iPhone? Can I just leave the APN3CON code on my iPhone data plan and use both both the BB and iPhone interchangeably (without getting extra charges)?
